WEIRTON - The Weirton community will be kicking off the Christmas season with a bang this year.
The Weirton Christmas Parade, presented by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24. The parade, with the theme "A Brighter Christmas," will, once again, be held at night, but the floats, cars and marching units won't be the only things lit up during the festivities.
"This year's parade will not only end with Santa Claus, but also a fireworks display," Chamber President Brenda Mull said.

Mull explained there was such a great turnout for the 2011 Christmas parade - the first ever to take place at night in Weirton - the chamber wanted to continue to add to the celebration and make it something everyone can enjoy.
Sponsors to date for the fireworks include Hancock County Savings Bank, Cattrell Companies Inc. and Marsh Pipe and Supply. Mull thanked the sponsors, saying the parade and other chamber programs would not be possible without the support of the local business community.
Hancock County Savings Bank is serving as the grand finale sponsor for the display, to be set off immediately following the parade from near Municipal Plaza.
"Hancock County Savings Bank recognizes the value of friends, family, and community. We felt that adding to the festivities of the chamber's Christmas Parade by sponsoring the fireworks would give us the opportunity to support our chamber and also bring a special atmosphere to this event. Everyone loves fireworks, and we wanted to be a part of delighting the families that attend this holiday event," said Catherine Ferrari, president and chief executive officer. "As a community bank since 1899, Hancock County Savings Bank is proud to sponsor this holiday, family event."
Mull thanked the sponsors for their contributions to the celebration, saying although the parade is almost two months away, many already are looking forward to the event, especially with the additions.
"We're really excited about having something new to bring to the community," Mull said.
The idea for the fireworks came about through discussions between the chamber and the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
As this will be the first parade in the area to include a fireworks display, Mull encourages residents interesting in attending this year's parade to plan to arrive early as they expect a larger crowd than in years past.
More details on this year's Christmas parade will be announced at a later date.
