Scientists cure cancer but no one cares?

"I can't blame the industry for not following up on this: a clinical trial costs millions of dollars, and even if DCA pans out, there is no profit at all to be gained from it. For this research, we have to turn to public support (they have an interest in better cancer treatments!) and to scientists and doctors themselves, who of course have a great personal interest in seeing their patients get better."

I dislike the above paragraph. The profit will be scientific knowledge, and if a cure is found the savings will be invaluable.
Maybe the cure will not be found as a direct result, but it might trigger some other useful applications.

If a fraction of the money used in wars is used to fund research for curing diseases like cancer, we will be living in a better world.

Is very sad how the world works.

I still think that we can do better than this.

Sifting through the golf sands for a hint of North Korea?s future

In keeping with his orderly ascension from ranking army general to top political official to supreme leader of the last hard-line Communist country on earth, North Korea?s chubby young Kim Jong-un is expected soon to take up golf, where he will challenge his father?s record of scoring almost a dozen holes-in-one on his first try at the game.

More related to this story

Afforded little else in the way of information on the internal doings of the secretive country, observers will be reduced to parsing news of the young leader?s score, speculating on what it might mean should he fail to match his father?s 38-under-par.

Such is the fantasy scenario of North Korea?s notorious ? often ludicrous ? propaganda machine, which is operating at full throttle after the death of the country?s last demigod ruler. Observers question whether the regime can maintain the barrage of lies big and little it has used for so long to mislead and repress its citizens.

In particular, they wonder how long it will be before the flood of information loosened by the digital revolution, which helped destabilize and wash away repressive regimes throughout the Middle East this year, finally leaks through slowly widening cracks in the Kimchi Curtain.

The regime has ?boxed itself in? with the extravagance of its lies, according to Hartmuth Kroll, a retired Canadian diplomat familiar with the region. By insisting for decades that the country is isolated because other nations are jealous of its success ? and that however hard life becomes, it is always worse beyond the border ? North Korea has courted a sharp reckoning.

?They?re riding a tiger,? Mr. Kroll said. ?The more that people find out about the rest of the world, the more dangerous it becomes for the regime.?

But so far, the North Korean regime has proven adept at keeping citizens in the dark. South Korea is the most wired nation in the world, according to Paul Evans, director of the Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia, whereas North Korea is the least. Information in and out is rigorously controlled, and citizens face severe punishment for as little as watching South Korean soap operas on smuggled flash drives ? ?illegal and ubiquitous,? according to one expert.

?North Korea is not like anywhere else in Asia or the world,? Prof. Evans said. ?This is a neo-feudal system with theocratic overtones that makes us think of the 16th century, not the 21st.?

Although many observers cite the recent appearance of a mobile-phone network in North Korea as evidence of potential opening, calls can only be made inside the country and handsets are confined to a loyal elite. Online social networks do not exist. To get news of the outside world, according to U.S. human-rights activist David Hawk, North Koreans must make a risky trip to the Chinese border, where smugglers rent them phones that operate on the neighbouring country?s network. ?But it?s illegal and dangerous because the police are actively trying to suppress it,? he said.

To get news into the country, the South Korean government and sanctioned groups until recently floated information-loaded helium balloons over the demilitarized zone.

Some observers predict the North Korean information barrier will soon fall. ?There are holes in it that are big and are growing,? Mr. Hawk said. ?The propaganda is breaking down.?

But others aren?t so sure. ?It?s not to suggest that there aren?t really powerful forces out there, but it?s like water hitting rocks,? Prof. Evans said. ?North Korea is sui generis.?

Canadian North Korea watcher and former Pyongyang resident Erich Weingartner, editor of the CanKor website, shares that skepticism. He questions how long the regime can maintain its outrageous propaganda ? ?I doubt they?re clever enough to change their ways,? Mr. Weingartner said ? but bits and pieces of actual information floating over the border in novel ways ?is a long way off from changing the mentality of the population.?

North Korean children are institutionalized at a very early age and force-fed the pseudo-mythological history of the Kim dynasty, according to Mr. Weingartner. Throughout the rest of their lives their behaviour is monitored by informants in their neighbourhoods and at work. He doubts that many would cheer if foreign troops ever attempted to ?liberate? them.

?There?s still a lot of people who regard at least Kim Il-sung as a god figure, even if they are less happy about Kim Jong-il and the new guy,? he said.

In that, they?re not as silly as they may seem, according to Prof. Evans. ?We?ve just gone through a Christmas season of virgin births and stars travelling across the sky,? he said, explaining the miraculous nature of North Korean history as a function of the first Kim?s education in the hands of Christian missionaries. ?That hyper-religiosity is built into the philosophy of the ruling elite in North Korea,? he said.

Do the North Korean people actually believe it?

?Do people in the West believe in transubstantiation?? Prof. Evans asked in reply. ?Do they believe in the devil??

Myths are sturdy things, in other words. And although miracles do happen, they are more likely to come in the form of golf scores than an Arab-style awakening in North Korea this spring.

Verizon reverses on $2 fee for one-time payments

(AP) ? After a customer backlash, Verizon Wireless on Friday dropped a plan to start charging $2 for every payment subscribers make over the phone or online with their credit or debit cards.

In a statement on its website Friday, the company said "customer feedback" prompted the decision to drop the "convenience fee" it wanted to introduce on Jan. 15.

Verizon wanted to steer people to electronic check payments, which are cheaper, and automatic credit card payments, which are more reliable.

A petition on Change.org against the fees had gathered more than 95,000 names by Friday afternoon, a day after Verizon, the country's largest cellphone company, announced the fees. The petition was set up by Molly Katchpole, who earlier this year started a successful campaign to make Bank of America drop a $5-per-month fee for debit-card use.

Payment processors for power companies usually charge "convenience fees" of up to $5 for every payment made by phone or online, but cellphone companies haven't taken the step yet. The furor against Verizon hints that they may have to wait further.

Verizon Wireless serves 91 million phones and other devices on accounts that pay the company directly, and more who pay indirectly through other companies. It's a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. of New York and Vodafone Group PLC of Britain.

Occupy activists prepare for Rose Parade march

An army of volunteers from across the nation has once again descended upon Pasadena's Rose Palace, where several floats are being covered with flowers.

Half a mile away in Singer Park, dozens of Occupy activists worked Thursday to prepare for a protest.

The activists, part of a movement whose encampments across the country grabbed headlines for months, are trying to take their message into 2012 with a high-profile foray into the Rose Parade.

While volunteers at the Rose Palace were armed with scissors, thousands of gallons of glue and millions of flower petals, Occupy activists worked with plastic pipe and banners.

FULL COVERAGE: 2012 Tournament of Roses

At the Rose Palace, a few young women perched atop an enormous elephant, gluing flowers to its head. In Singer Park, activists practiced walking with a 70-by-40-foot octopus made of recycled plastic bags.

"This is the real Rose Parade, and the other is the Rose Charade," said Pete Thottam, 40, an Occupy activist.

Protesters will march the parade route after the floats and marching bands have passed. The group has been working with Pasadena police and Tournament of Roses officials on how not to disrupt the parade.

"Our goal is to put Occupy's best foot forward," Thottam said, adding that activists expect more than 1,000 participants. "We recognize that this is a historic, iconic event geared toward middle America and the family."

The group says the protest will be "G-rated" and will stick to nonviolence in expressing Occupy's messages against income inequality and corporate power.

Though the Occupy movement is leaderless, it has taken some organization to get ready for Monday's event.

During the rehearsal Thursday, activists were assigned roles, such as working with an Occupy peacekeeping team or carrying the plastic pipes that will support two large replicas of the preamble to the Constitution. Each replica ? one with the words "We the People," one with "We the Corporations" ? requires dozens of people to hold up. Maneuvering the octopus "human float" took some practice in coordination. Protesters spun in circles, moving it through the park. Each tentacle will have several protesters lifting it.

The octopus, said activist Mark Lipman of Los Angeles, represents Wall Street's stranglehold on political, cultural and social life, with tentacles "that reach into your pocket to get your money and a tentacle to get your house."

More than 50 people will constitute the protesters' peacekeeping team, which will seek to make sure no violence or other disruptions occur.

"This is as peaceful as is possible," said activist Julio Toruno. "We don't want to disrupt; we just want to be seen."

Toruno, 57, of Altadena, has black spray paint caked under his fingernails from hours of making vests in his backyard for the peacekeeping team. The work is slow but worth it, he said. For him, Occupy the Rose Parade is a way to boldly state that the movement is strong.

"The Occupy movement is very much alive," he said. "What will happen after this, I don't know, but it's exciting."

As a Pasadena resident, Hector Aristizabal, 50, has watched the Rose Parade for decades with his children. On Thursday, his children, now teenagers, were with him to help with Occupy's parade visuals.

"The Rose Parade is a beautiful display, but it's more of a display of corporate power combined with some beauty," Aristizabal said as his son and daughter practiced moving the octopus.

"For me, this is ? an opportunity to express our desires," he said. "We don't need millions of dollars to make a float to express ourselves. We just need our imagination."

With volunteers meeting over several weeks, Thottam said, the inevitable happened: Occupy the Rose Parade became fun.

"People are enjoying it," he said. "It started out as 100% mission. It's become 50% mission, 50% fun. We've gotten to know each other."

Echoed Lipman: "This is a lot of fun. Organizing is great. I could either be doing something fun and important, or I could be at home watching television."

Chevron to Sell Stake in Yinka Folawiyo Oil Block

As indigenous oil firm Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum Company (YFP) continues in its quest to commence oil production from its Aje field, in Oil Mining Lease 113, one of its joint venture partners Chevron Nigeria Deepwater H Limited, a subsidiary of US oil giant Chevron Corporation, has moved to sell its stake in the oil block, THISDAY (Lagos) reported Sunday.

The Aje field was discovered in 1996, in water depths ranging from 328 - 4,921 feet (100 - 1,500 meters) off the coast of Nigeria, about 40 miles southwest of Lagos.

When it is brought on stream, Lagos State will join the league of oil producing states in Nigeria, and could entitle the state to 13 percent derivation based on the?Onshore/Offshore Dichotomy Abolition Act of 2004, which entitles littoral states to derivation from crude oil produced on offshore locations within water depths of less than 200 meters isobaths.

YFP holds 60 percent interest in the block, while Chevron Nigeria Deepwater Ltd, Vitol Exploration Nigeria Ltd, Panoro Energy ASA, and Providence Resources Oil and Gas, an Irish firm hold the remaining 40 percent.

It was learnt that Chevron as technical advisor and operator of the block, owns 45 of the 40 percent interest in the oil field, but now plans to sell the 45 percent to Energy Equity Resources Limited (EER) which was once a joint venture partner to Panoro Energy.

Panoro is an international independent oil and gas company with offices in Oslo, London and Rio de Janeiro, and has a 6.502 percent stake in the OML 113.

Industry sources told THISDAY at the weekend that part of the deal could see EER take over operatorship of the block in place of Chevron.

EER is a London-based oil and gas company with Nigerian ownership. It currently has operations in the Joint Development Zone between Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe, in Block 1, as well as in OML 115, an offshore block near the giant Zafiro and Alba field bordering Equatorial Guinea, and OPLs 281 and 233 in the Niger Delta.

However, YFP sources said that the transfer of operatorship is not possible, stating that while Chevron is at liberty to sell its stake in OML 113 to a third party, the operatorship will revert to YFP because the JV agreement stipulates that in the event the technical partner (Chevron) withdraws or sells its interest to a third party, operatorship shall be retained by Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum.

The Aje field was discovered in 1996, in water depths ranging from 100 -1,500 metres off the coast of Lagos. Unlike most concessions which are tertiary sandstones, Aje has multiple oil, gas and gas condensate reservoirs in the Turonian, Cenomanian and Albian sandstones, and as such has more affinity with the recent Jubilee and Tweneboa discoveries offshore Ghana.

Four wells have been drilled to date in the Aje field. Aje-1 and 2 tested oil and gas condensates at high rates. Aje-4, drilled in early 2008, logged significant pay and confirmed the presence of four productive reservoirs. The Aje field has full 3D seismic coverage.

There is a unique gas sales opportunity available to the partnership, which also includes Vitol and Providence Resources, via access to the West Africa Gas Pipeline project ("WAGP").

The WAGP was commissioned in May 2009 to provide Nigerian gas to end-users in Benin, Togo and Ghana, and is routed directly through OML113, only 5 kilometres from the Aje field.

The location of the Aje field, lying 26 miles (43 kilometers) south west of Lagos, may also provide a ready market for gas and associated LPG.

Gingrich sharpens attacks on Romney, Paul (AP)

DYERSVILLE, Iowa ? So much for staying positive.

In just the last 24 hours, Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has blasted rival Mitt Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate" who isn't "man enough" to take responsibility for the harsh attack ads being run on his behalf. And he lambasted Ron Paul's views as "totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American."

As his lead in Iowa polls has evaporated, Gingrich's rhetoric has grown ever sharper, even as he insists ? sometimes in the same breath ? that he's running a positive campaign.

"I am not going to go negative, period," Gingrich said Tuesday at a campaign stop in Dyersville, Iowa, to appreciative murmurs from the crowd that had crammed into the National Farm Toy Museum to hear him speak. That remark came after a CNN interview in which he said he wouldn't vote for Paul if the Texas congressman became the GOP nominee and he mocked Romney for not having the courage to face him in a one-on-one debate.

It is classic Gingrich, the bomb-throwing leader of the Republican revolution who even now seems to chafe at minding his manners. He acknowledged Tuesday that it has taken "discipline" not to counterpunch as the attacks have flooded in.

So he is trying to have it both ways.

In Dubuque, Iowa, at the first stop of a 22-city bus tour leading up to Jan. 3 caucuses, Gingrich offered Romney praise, then promptly opened fire.

"I don't want to be invidious about Gov. Romney, who I said I think is a very competent manager and a very smart guy," Gingrich said. "But to have somebody who is a Massachusetts moderate, who said he did not want to go back to the Reagan-Bush years, who voted as a Democrat for Paul Tsongas in `92, who campaigned to the left of Teddy Kennedy.... to have him run a commercial that questions my conservatism?"

In the evolving Gingrich playbook, statements which are factually accurate are not attacks.

"I was describing him accurately," he said in South Carolina last week after taking a jab at Romney.

For Gingrich, taking the high road may be a strategy born as much out of necessity as ideology.

His campaign nearly collapsed earlier this year, so he trails the other Republican frontrunners in fundraising, which limits his ability to launch a sustained negative campaign.

The former Georgia congressman also seems to have made the political calculation that to win over voters, he must soften some of the brash rough edges that defined his tenure as House speaker.

After all, he made his political reputation perfecting the art of using words as weapons.

A 1996 memo to Republican House candidates, which Gingrich endorsed in a cover letter, urged Republicans running for office to use words like "traitor," "pathetic" and "sick" to define Democratic opponents, their proposals and their party. "Language matters,'" the memo said.

Campaigning for the White House, he has taken his own advice.

A favorite Gingrich technique in recent weeks has been to extol his campaign's positive tone while eviscerating nameless GOP opponents, using words like "disgusting" and "reprehensible."

"Shame on them for not caring enough about America to be positive," he said.

He has a receptive audience in Iowa voters, weary of being bombarded with nasty robocalls, mailers and television ads as the primary hurtles into the final days.

"I'm just sick of it all," said Bette Carlson, who showed up to hear Gingrich speak at Mabe's Pizza in Decorah, Iowa, Tuesday night. "Anyone who stays out of the mud improves their chances of getting my vote."

Still, the Gingrich camp maintains it is giving the pledge more than just lip service. They note an Iowa staffer had to resign after calling Mormonism ? Romney's religion ? a cult.

And Gingrich argues he has enough cash to run a negative ad war if he wanted to. He notes his campaign made the choice to run positive ads across Iowa beginning Wednesday.

Still, Gingrich might know better than most this election cycle that negative ads work.

He has seen his support slide as the airwaves in Iowa have filled with ads reminding voters of his ethics woes, a public service announcement he shot with Democrat Nancy Pelosi and his lucrative work for Freddie Mac.

The libertarian-leaning Paul has assailed Gingrich for "serial hypocrisy," painting him as a career politician who lined his pockets after leaving office by selling access.

In an interview, Romney called him "zany."

How long can Gingrich keep up the positive facade? Asked if he would he would continue the commitment in a general election against Democrat Barack Obama, Gingrich dodged the question.

"Barack Obama's record is so terrible that if you just tell the truth it sounds negative," Gingrich said

Mozilla a Partner, Not Competitor: Google Chrome Engineer

In what could be a sign of improving ties between Google and Mozilla, Peter Kasting, engineer in the Google Chrome web-browser development team referred to Mozilla as a partner, and not a competitor. The statement came in context of the recently-renewed search engine deal between the two, where Google pays Mozilla for setting Google as its primary search engine, both on its browser search bar, and its Firefox start page. Kasting also went to the extant of stating that Chrome isn't necessarily a profit-seeking operation by Google.

Kasting stated: "People never seem to understand why Google builds Chrome no matter how many times I try to pound it into their heads. It's very simple: the primary goal of Chrome is to make the web advance as much and as quickly as possible. It's completely irrelevant to this goal whether Chrome actually gains tons of users or whether instead the web advances because the other browser vendors step up their game and produce far better browsers. Either way the web gets better. Job done."

The Google Chrome engineer went on to add that Google is not worried about competition to Chrome, saying that Mozilla Firefox holds an important place in the web ecosystem and its advancement. "Firefox is an important product because it can be a different product with different design decisions and serve different users well," he added.

(AP) ? North Korea's next leader burnished his diplomatic skills Monday, welcoming a private South Korean mourning delegation as state media revealed a new title that gives Kim Jong Un authority over political matters.

Kim Jong Un has rapidly gained prominence since the death of his father Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17, and his brief meeting with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role.

State media have showered Kim with new titles. On Saturday, the North referred to him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him. On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the ruling party.

On Monday, a South Korean delegation stood in a line on a red carpet and bowed silently during their visit to the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, where Kim Jong Il's body is lying in state in a bier surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard.

Kim Jong Un gave the South Koreans his thanks after they expressed condolences and sympathy, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said. Seoul's Unification Ministry confirmed the meeting in a statement but didn't elaborate.

The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North.

Their meeting with Kim Jong Un could be intended to push South Korea to pursue previously agreed upon cooperative projects that would give North Korea much-needed aid, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, which is in South Korea.

Footage from AP Television News in North Korea earlier showed the South Koreans being greeted by North Korean officials during a stop at a factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

Monday's meeting appeared to be Kim Jong Un's first reported meeting with South Koreans since his father's death.

The Kim family has extended its control over the country of 24 million people to a third generation with Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor.

Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years, wielded power as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission. His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party last year, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." Rodong Sinmun has also called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used years ago to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun," and state media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral is set to take place Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funereal flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

Sottile, Kingston's exiting mayor, reflects with pride on his decade in office (video)

Mayor James Sottile is shown in his City Hall office earlier this week. (Freeman photo by Paul Kirby)

KINGSTON ? Around Mayor James Sottile?s office in City Hall, much has disappeared: the photos on bookshelves, framed newspapers on the walls, mementos that once were scattered about.

But the memories of being Kingston?s mayor for nearly a decade will linger for a long, long time for Sottile.

?I have loved being mayor of this city,? said Sottile, who leaves office at the end of this month. ?It has been a dream come true for me.?

Sottile leaves office not sure of what?s next, though he has obtained licenses to sell real estate and insurance. What is certain is that he plans to take a long break from politics.

?I am going to need to unwind ? get out of the fishbowl,? he said during a recent interview in which he recalled the ups and downs, tense times and proud moments of his tenure.

The mayor, a Democrat, has drawn both praise and criticism during his time in office, which began on Jan. 21, 2002, when his predecessor, T.R. Gallo, died in office at age 41. At the time, Sottile was the city?s alderman-at-large, who, according to the charter, becomes mayor in the event of the mayor?s death.

?I remember my first act as mayor was to order the flags at City Hall to fly at half mast for my friend,? Sottile said.

Ward 2 Alderman Thomas Hoffay, a fellow Democrat, said Sottile has done right by the city in a number of ways.

?I have had the privilege of knowing Jim Sottile long before he became mayor of Kingston, and I think he is a great guy with a huge heart and generous spirit,? said Hoffay, the Common Council?s incoming majority leader. Continued...

Hoffay said Sottile should be credited with, among other things, putting the city on firmer financial ground and taking on the repair of failing infrastructure, such as roads and sewer lines.

?He had to right the ship,? Hoffay said.

?His decisions weren?t always popular, but he knew they were the right ones to make and he made them with no apologies,? said Alderman Bill Reynolds, D-Ward 7, the Common Council?s outgoing majority leader.

Sottile has had his critics, too. Kingston Republican Committee Chairman Anthony Sinagra once said he hoped the mayor would run for re-election this past November, arguing that he was so unpopular that a GOP challenger would have a shot at winning.

Sottile ? who won full four-year terms in 2003 and 2007 ? announced a year ago that he would not run again. The man who won the office last month is fellow Democrat Shayne Gallo, the late T.R.?s brother.

Alderwoman Andi Turco-Levin, the council?s outgoing minority leader, said Sottile?s administration has been a mixed bag.

?It?s the good, the bad, and the ugly,? said Turco-Levin, R-Ward 1, who tried unsuccessfully to win the GOP nomination to run for mayor this year. ?There are many things that Jim worked his heart out on, and he did what he felt was best for the city of Kingston.?

But Turco-Levin said clouds over the Sottile administration include continued tax increases, poor planning on property reassessments, no significant movement on developing a city master plan and having to make payments after successful assessment grievances.

?There have been missed opportunities,? said Turco-Levin, who noted plans that never materialized for an Uptown condominium project and a proposed waterfront hotel called the Noah.

Sottile admits those projects were disappointments but points out that he got ?people to the table to talk.? Continued...

He also admits to often getting extremely frustrated and having to ?blow off steam.?

?But I am the kind who would be right back in your office in 10 minutes apologizing,? Sottile said. ?I am a human being. I am a passionate guy.?

At times, Sottile would become angered at something in the media and would dodge reporters? telephone calls. Even so, City Hall under his administration remained transparent, leaving reporters free to get information without hassle and interview department heads at will.

?The fact of the matter is I had no right to tell people they cannot speak to the press,? Sottile said. ?I am not a dictator. I was elected by a community, and the way to get information out to the community is by people talking about what we were doing.?

And Sottile says his administration has done a lot.

He said his success as a politician started while he was alderman-at-large, when he advocated for the construction of a homeless shelter on Thomas Street in Midtown and supported a special tax district to support the Kingston Library.

Seeing the shelter move from a former church basement in the Rondout district to an expanded facility in Midtown, he said, ?was one of my most proud moments.?

He also noted the city was suffering from a $1 million budget shortfall when he took office but that he?s leaving his successor a city with a significantly improved bond rating.

Sottile said he kept his word on pledges to push for new housing of all kinds, affordable and market rate, including in Midtown, where the city partnered with? the Rural Ulster Preservation Co., Ulster YouthBuild and Ulster County Habitat for Humanity. Sottile also insisted that Birchwood Village, an affordable apartment complex on Flatbush Avenue, be open to families.

?I think that if you look at my 10 years, I have been true to my word,? he said. Continued...

Sottile said that pledge is evident in his successes in getting contaminated sites cleaned up and redeveloped. The CVS pharmacy at Washington Avenue and Schwenk Drive and the Walgreens pharmacy on Broadway were built on sites formerly deemed toxic; similarly, a longtime former junk yard on the city?s Rondout Creek waterfront was removed.

Sottile frequently cites as crowning achievements the renovation of the Kirkland Hotel at Main Street and Clinton Avenue, which had stood vacant more than 25 years; water sale agreements with the neighboring town of Ulster; luring a second tenant to the Kingston Business Park off Delaware Avenue; and the establishment of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection?s upstate offices in the former National Micronetics building on Smith Avenue.

Sottile said he is also proud that the Kingston Police Department has been able to keep crime at bay, with the number of reported serious crimes shrinking since he took office. Sottile and former Police Chief Gerald Keller, who retired at the end of October, have said the statistics show serious crime in the city has plummeted during the past decade.

?People wanted me to make decisions based on perception, but I made decisions based on reality in keeping people safe, not on perceptions,? Sottile said.

Sottile calls regrettable a scandal that rocked the city police department earlier this year with the indictment of former Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews on multiple charges stemming from Matthews? alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in public money.

?It was a very difficult time,? Sottile said.

He said there have been anxious moments as well ? none greater than when New Jersey-based white supremacist Hal Turner held a rally in Kingston in November 2005 in response to an assault on a white Kingston High School student by a black youth.

The demonstration on Broadway, between the school and City Hall, drew more counterdemonstrators than Turner supporters and went off without any violence or arrests.

?It was humbling to have this community come together and have them hear my pleas to stay away, and they did,? Sottile said. ?You just had to stay focused and solid as a rock. You couldn?t show any weakness.?

There also have been some embarrassments during Sottile?s time in office, notably a sexual harassment suit filed against the city by three female employees of the city Department of Public Works.

The women alleged improper treatment in the workplace based on their gender, and a federal jury agreed, finding in favor of two of the three plaintiffs and awarded them a total of $85,000 in damages.

Sottile said his wife, Mary Beth, and son, Jamie, have been a strong source of support.

?I am appreciative of my family,? Sottile said.

The mayor also said he will never forget his time at the city?s helm.

?It is an experience that I will always remember and always be grateful for,? he said.

Christmas turns into opening day for NBA teams

Finally, the conversation changes.

It's time for the NBA to ditch the dollars and nonsense of the lockout for the alleys and oops in Lob City, the new nickname for the suddenly exciting Los Angeles Clippers.

For months, all the talk was about lockouts, salary caps and mediation. Now there are games that count as a new season begins Christmas Day.

For all practical purposes, Clippers fans have been locked out of competitive basketball for the better part of three decades. Now they get entertainment of the highest order ? watching Blake Griffin throw down lob passes from Chris Paul.

The 2011-12 season, shortened to 66 games, debuts today when five marquee games will be played from morning deep into the night. This marks a first step for the league as it looks to bury a damaging offseason marred by a five-month labor dispute and several stars trying to force their way out of town.

The day begins with Boston and New York and then goes to an NBA Finals rematch with Miami at Dallas. Next up is Chicago at the Lakers, followed by the small-market special ? Orlando at Oklahoma City ? before CP3 makes his regular-season debut as a Clipper at Golden State in the nightcap.

"The lockout was hectic for everybody," Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley said. "We were bored.... Now we feel like we've got a purpose in life. We can do what we do best."

It's time.

It's time for Derek Fisher to be seen in Lakers gold, not Brooks Brothers gray.

It's time for postgame news conferences with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, not post-meeting sessions with David Stern and Adam Silver.

It's time for Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks to defend their title on the court, not for Jeffrey Kessler and the players' union to defend their decision to disband in the courts.

"I don't even want to talk about the lockout anymore," Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant said. "It was just so frustrating to go through that and everything that went on, us meeting and not meeting and not coming to an agreement and fans getting upset with us. It was tough. But I'm glad we got through it."

It didn't look so good for a while. Once the dispute was finally settled, a whole new drama broke out with Paul and Dwight Howard looking for trades out of New Orleans and Orlando.

Howard eventually softened his stance, but his future is still the focus in Orlando.

"I don't think our situation is going to go away," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "But I think it'll be a lot more focused on the games than there has been (focus) on the lockout."

The Lakers thought they had a deal for Paul, but Stern, acting as the owner of the Hornets, nixed that, and another crisis was born. The Clippers swooped in at the end, seizing some of the spotlight from Kobe and the Lakers for the first time since, well, ever.

"Hey, that's got to be driving Kobe," Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "That should drive (Pau) Gasol and (Andrew) Bynum and those guys and Derek Fisher to say, 'Hey, no way I'm going to let them take over Los Angeles."'

The two teams met twice in the preseason, and the rivalry quickly escalated. Bryant injured his wrist on a hard foul in the first game and Lakers agitator Matt Barnes shoved Griffin to the court in the second game.

That wasn't the only miniseries infused with more intensity and energy than any exhibition game in recent years.

The Timberwolves were buoyant after finishing their second game against the Bucks with a 12-0 run to finish the preseason 2-0. James and Quentin Richardson were seen trading shoulder blocks all the way down the floor in Miami's preseason finale against Orlando.

"That's our sanctuary. When we get out between the lines and we're playing, that's all that matters," Richardson said. "And that's definitely our escape from anything going on, or anything negative or anything like that."

The melodrama surrounding Paul's request to be traded from New Orleans could have ripple effects throughout the Western Conference. The Lakers have been grousing since losing out on Paul and sending Lamar Odom to Dallas, but they weren't the only team hurt by that decision.

The Rockets had agreed to send Kevin Martin and Luis Scola to the Hornets as part of a three-team deal that would have landed them Gasol. Instead, they had to abandon any designs on signing Nene, go with Sam Dalembert in the middle and do some serious damage control with Scola and Martin.

While all the drama was unfolding, the Thunder have been playing the role of the young, hungry contender, ferociously working while no one was watching and preparing to throw nothing but haymakers as soon as the bell rings.

The Heat are back for another run at the title. James, Wade and Chris Bosh had the whole league against them after a presumptuous welcome ceremony on South Beach. But the spotlight hasn't been quite as bright while everyone has been looking toward the Clippers and Magic, where Howard's wishes seem to change by the day.

"It's good to see other guys around the league get that attention," Wade said. "I think they got enough of us last year. It's good to see other teams, other franchises, get that spotlight for a while. Hope they enjoy it."

The fan hunger is there as well. The Clippers sold out their game against the Lakers, and the first in that series was the most viewed preseason game in NBATV history.

The Timberwolves had 15,000 people attend their home preseason game against the Bucks, and another 2,500 turned out for a free practice on a Monday afternoon just to get a glimpse of Ricky Rubio.

More than 10,000 fans watched a free practice with the New York Knicks, and the Thunder's rabid fan base packed the arena for Durant's return to the court.

"We had to sacrifice a little bit of time and there were some harsh words thrown our way, but at the end of the day, everybody got what they wanted, which was basketball," Durant said. "That's what we worked hard for, is to play the game of basketball. We had to work the business part out and now we're just back to basketball."

Bombs rock Baghdad, raising fears of sectarian war (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A terrifying wave of bombs tore through mostly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 69 people and evoking fears that Iraq could dissolve into a new round of sectarian violence now that American troops have left.

The attacks appeared to be a well-coordinated assault by Sunni militants linked to al-Qaida and targeted markets, grocery stores, cafes and government buildings in a dozen neighborhoods. They coincided with a government crisis that has already strained ties between the two sects to the breaking point.

For many Iraqis, this could be the beginning of a nightmare scenario: The fragile alliance in the governing coalition is collapsing, large-scale violence bearing the hallmarks of al-Qaida insurgents has returned and Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki may be moving to grab the already limited power of the minority Sunnis.

"The conditions that perpetuate civil wars are making a hasty comeback," said Ramzy Mardini, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington.

The bombings may be linked more to the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops Sunday than the political crisis, but all together the developments raise the specter of a return to the Shiite-Sunni sectarian bloodshed that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

Al-Maliki is engaged in a showdown with the top Sunni political leader in the country. His government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi for what al-Hashemi says are trumped-up charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

That has thrown Iraq's political community into a crisis, with Sunnis suspicious that al-Maliki is making a power grab in the wake of the American military departure.

Thrown into this already heated mixture was some of the worst violence Iraq has seen this year.

At least 16 blasts went off across Baghdad, killing 69 people and wounding nearly 200 more. Most exploded in the morning but at least two struck Thursday evening.

The deadliest attack was in the Karrada neighborhood, where a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle blew himself up outside a government office. Two police officers at the scene said the bomber was driving an ambulance and told guards that he needed to get to a nearby hospital. After the guards let him through, he drove to the building and blew himself up, the officers said.

"I was sleeping in my bed when the explosion happened," said 12-year-old Hussain Abbas, standing in his pajamas. "I jumped from my bed and rushed to my mom's lap. I told her I did not want to go to school today. I'm terrified."

In Washington, the White House condemned the bombings and said attempts to derail progress in Iraq will fail. Press secretary Jay Carney said the attacks serve no agenda "other than murder and hatred."

Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama's point man on Iraq, called President Jalal Talabani to discuss the situation. It was Biden's second round of phone calls to Iraqi officials this week.

Gen. Ray Odierno, the U.S. Army chief of staff, also visited Baghdad Thursday in what was described as a trip arranged before the political crisis erupted.

It was exactly this type of violence in the early days after the U.S.-led invasion that eventually spiraled into a near-civil war. Sunni militants such as al-Qaida saw Iraq as their battleground against first the U.S. and then Shiites, whom they do not consider as true Muslims.

Shiite militias, fired up by years of anger over repression under Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime, then fought back in what eventually became a tit-for-tat battle fought mainly across Baghdad. A bombing against a Shiite neighborhood would be answered by residents of a Sunni neighborhood being dragged out and shot.

That's the type of reaction that analysts say al-Qaida is trying to spark with violence such as Thursday's blasts. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the bombings bore all the hallmarks of al-Qaida's Sunni insurgents: a mix of sticky bombs, a suicide bomber, roadside blasts and car bombs.

Al-Qaida in Iraq is severely debilitated from its strength in the early years of the war, but still has the capability to launch coordinated and deadly assaults from time to time. U.S. military officials worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after their departure.

If Sunnis feel invested in the political process and see that they have a future within it, analysts say it's unlikely that al-Qaida and its ilk could gain much traction within the wider Sunni community, especially after the bloodbath that Iraqis have already endured and are not eager to repeat.

Many Sunnis fear the arrest warrant against al-Hashemi is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures and shore up Shiite control across the country.

In this already tense atmosphere, Hadi Jalo, a Baghdad-based political analyst, said Thursday's violence will likely elicit an even stronger crackdown by al-Maliki as opposed to a conciliatory move.

"What is clear now is that the situation is deteriorating," he said. "I think al-Maliki, who has the absolute power now ... will strike back, and he will escalate his crackdown against his political rivals. The situation now will continue to fuel the sectarian tensions."

Coordinated campaigns such as this generally take weeks to plan, and could have been timed to coincide with the end of the American military presence in Iraq, possibly to undercut U.S. claims that they are leaving behind a stable and safe Iraq.

Iraqis have mixed feelings toward the departure of the American military that invaded nearly nine years ago. Their gratitude for the ouster of Saddam is coupled with anger at the violence that eventually overcame the country.

Now, especially after Thursday's explosions, they wonder whether their security forces are up to the task of protecting the country and whether their political institutions will survive intact.

"Such horrible blasts have occurred just one week after the American withdrawal, and then imagine what would happen after one month or one year after the Americans leaving," said Abdul Rahman Qassim, a 46-year-old lawyer in the northern city of Mosul.

Virgina ballot shows Gingrich campaign woes (Reuters)

ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made a last-minute dash to get on the ballot for the Republican primary in Virginia, in another sign his campaign may not be ready for prime time and could struggle to beat President Barack Obama next year.

Gingrich, who is polling as a frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination both nationally and in early voting states, was forced to hold a rally of supporters in Virginia on Wednesday night as he hurries to get the 10,000 signatures necessary to get on the ballot there.

Gingrich and his wife Callista attended the event at a hotel just across the Potomac River from Washington, far from Iowa where voters are less than two weeks away from kicking off the 2012 election season on January 3. Most of his party rivals are already campaigning in Iowa or New Hampshire.

The former House of Representatives speaker has acknowledged that his campaign is behind and hustling to translate recent increased support for his candidacy to organizational capabilities.

Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot in Missouri and barely made the deadline in Ohio, a key swing state in the general election. About 250 people attended the event in Virginia, where Gingrich said his campaign is "going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need."

By contrast, his main Republican rival Mitt Romney has a bigger and slicker campaign organization. The former Massachusetts governor's staff has already handed in 16,000 signatures to get on the Virginia ballot.

Gingrich said in New Hampshire earlier that his last-minute scramble should not lead Republicans to believe that Romney is a more viable candidate than he is.

"It shows you that a guy who runs for six years and has millions of dollars has a different operational style than the guy who arouses thousands of people," Gingrich said.

Kevin Madden, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign, scoffed at Gingrich's troubles in Virginia, where the former speaker lives in a wealthy suburb of Washington.

"The effort to defeat President Obama in 2012 is of utmost importance to Republican voters," Madden said. "If, like Newt Gingrich, you're just going to casually wing it in a primary campaign, it's an indication you plan to just wing it in a general election campaign.

"We need a nominee who will be organized and disciplined, not scrambling around for ballot access at the last minute."

In Virginia, a candidate has to present at least 10,000 signatures of registered voters, with 400 coming from each of the state's 11 congressional districts.

Gingrich has until 5 p.m. on Thursday to deliver those to the state board of elections in sealed boxes. A spokesman for the board said it recommends that candidates present at least 15,000 signatures - 700 from each district - to ensure legitimacy.

Gingrich said he has enough signatures to meet the requirement. He will hold another event on Thursday in Richmond, Virginia and will hand-deliver the signatures, he said.

Todd Elliott, a Gingrich supporter from Columbus, Ohio, attended the event in Virginia and said he is worried that Gingrich has to spend time in Virginia playing catch-up to Romney on organizational matters.

"There's obviously some concern there," Elliott said. "He should be in Iowa."

Gingrich's campaign all but collapsed last summer when much of his staff quit over questions about management.

If the race goes to many states, as Romney's campaign is anticipating, winning states like Virginia, which holds its primary on March 6, could determine the Republican nominee.

Lara Brown, a political science professor at Villanova University and author of the book "Jockeying for the American Presidency," said Gingrich's late-to-the-party style is "not a reassuring sign for those looking for clues into how he'd act as president."

"Although there is much more to governing than campaigning, candidates must show voters that they are competent enough to run a nationwide presidential campaign if they have any hope of sitting in the Oval Office," Brown said.

Gingrich is an unlikely front-runner as a longtime Washington insider with a history of bombastic, controversial statements, marital infidelity and private-sector work that could be confused with lobbying activity.

The eventual Republican nominee will Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election.
