(AP) ? No. 9 West Virginia and the Big 12, perfect together.

Geno Smith and the fast-moving, high-scoring Mountaineers proved they fit right in with their new conference, outracing No. 25 Baylor 70-63 on Saturday in the Big 12's highest-scoring game ever.

Smith tied a conference mark with eight touchdown passes and narrowly missed another one with 656 yards passing.

"It did feel like one of those classic Texas shootouts," said Smith, whose school moved over from the Big East this season. "That's kind of what the Big 12 is about."

Smith outdueled Baylor's Nick Florence, who broke Heisman Trophy-winning predecessor Robert Griffin III's school record with 581 yards. Florence threw for five TDs.

School, conference and FBS marks all got rewritten in this one.

The game also set a new record for the most points scored in a game involving a team ranked in The Associated Press poll. The previous mark of 124 was set in No. 12 Oklahoma's 82-42 win over Colorado in 1980.

How wild was it? Smith, the early Heisman front-runner, had more TD passes than incompletions (six). He finished 45 of 51 and still doesn't have an interception this season.

"Can you please tell me how you can improve on that?" West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.

Maybe not on offense, but both defenses have plenty of work to do.

West Virginia amassed a school-record 807 yards and the teams combined for 1,507 yards of offense and 67 first downs. Six receivers had at least 100 yards receiving.

The Bears' Terrance Williams set a Big 12 record with 314 yards receiving. The old mark was set minutes earlier by West Virginia's Stedman Bailey, who had 303 yards and a school-record five TDs.

Williams' 8-yard scoring catch brought Baylor (3-1) within 70-63 with 3:08 left.

But Dustin Garrison ran for 17 yards on third down and the Mountaineers ran out the clock to snap Baylor's nine-game winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.

"We expect to score that many points a game," Florence said. "But the goal is to score more than our opponent and we came up a little short today."

The combined 19 touchdowns tied an FBS mark, last reached when Navy beat North Texas 74-62 in 2007. That matchup set the FBS record for most points in a regulation game at 136.

Baylor, meanwhile, tied an FBS mark for the most points scored by a losing team.

Among the other records, Smith set school single-game marks for completions, yards and touchdown passes.

Bailey and Tavon Austin became the first FBS teammates with 200 yards receiving since 2007.

Going back to the Orange Bowl, West Virginia has scored 10 touchdowns three times in its last five games.

"Statistically, it's my best game ever," Smith said. "But I think it's more about the team, and I think it just lets us know that we're going to have to battle it out every week against some really tough teams in the Big 12.

"I could care less about a Heisman Trophy. The big thing for us what that we won the game today. We're on a mission, and we want to win them all."

West Virginia went ahead for good early in the third quarter, but Baylor almost always had an answer.

Austin made long touchdown grabs three minutes apart while Baylor punted and missed a long field goal. Smith stayed in a groove, throwing three passes of 45 yards or more in the third quarter alone. His 47-yarder to Bailey set up Andrew Buie's second short TD run for a 56-35 lead.

The way this game was going, though, no cushion was safe.

Williams caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Florence and, after Baylor's defense forced a rare punt, Florence's sneak brought the Bears within 56-49, and there was still 14:14 left.

But Bailey scored on TD grabs of 87 and 39 yards after that.

"We fought hard," said Baylor coach Art Briles. "But we didn't respond well enough to win the game."

Holgorsen talked at length about how impatient he got watching Maryland's offense run the clock down before each snap last week.

There was no chance of a slowdown from Baylor.

The teams scored on 10 of their final 13 possessions of the first half. Seven of those drives lasted under two minutes.

Smith, whose passing yardage total was 5 yards shy of the Big 12 mark, completed a school-record 14 straight passes at one point. After a dropped pass, Smith completed 12 more in a row.

Smith's fourth TD pass came with 29 seconds left until halftime, but that was more than enough time for Florence. On second down he threw down the left sideline to Lanear Sampson, who juked two defenders and went 67 yards untouched to tie the score at 35-35.

The Mountaineers now must hope they can generate points on the road when they head to No. 12 Texas and Texas Tech over the next two weeks.

"Not every Big 12 game is like this," Holgorsen said.

Christmas parade will light up the sky

WEIRTON - The Weirton community will be kicking off the Christmas season with a bang this year.

The Weirton Christmas Parade, presented by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24. The parade, with the theme "A Brighter Christmas," will, once again, be held at night, but the floats, cars and marching units won't be the only things lit up during the festivities.

"This year's parade will not only end with Santa Claus, but also a fireworks display," Chamber President Brenda Mull said.

Hancock County Savings Bank is serving as the grand finale sponsor of the fireworks display which will conclude this year's Weirton Christmas Parade on Nov. 24. Cathy Ferrari, president and chief executive officer of Hancock County Savings Bank, presents the sponsorship to Weirton Chamber President Brenda Mull. -- Craig Howell

Mull explained there was such a great turnout for the 2011 Christmas parade - the first ever to take place at night in Weirton - the chamber wanted to continue to add to the celebration and make it something everyone can enjoy.

Sponsors to date for the fireworks include Hancock County Savings Bank, Cattrell Companies Inc. and Marsh Pipe and Supply. Mull thanked the sponsors, saying the parade and other chamber programs would not be possible without the support of the local business community.

Hancock County Savings Bank is serving as the grand finale sponsor for the display, to be set off immediately following the parade from near Municipal Plaza.

"Hancock County Savings Bank recognizes the value of friends, family, and community. We felt that adding to the festivities of the chamber's Christmas Parade by sponsoring the fireworks would give us the opportunity to support our chamber and also bring a special atmosphere to this event. Everyone loves fireworks, and we wanted to be a part of delighting the families that attend this holiday event," said Catherine Ferrari, president and chief executive officer. "As a community bank since 1899, Hancock County Savings Bank is proud to sponsor this holiday, family event."

Mull thanked the sponsors for their contributions to the celebration, saying although the parade is almost two months away, many already are looking forward to the event, especially with the additions.

"We're really excited about having something new to bring to the community," Mull said.

The idea for the fireworks came about through discussions between the chamber and the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.

As this will be the first parade in the area to include a fireworks display, Mull encourages residents interesting in attending this year's parade to plan to arrive early as they expect a larger crowd than in years past.

More details on this year's Christmas parade will be announced at a later date.

Mazda MX-5 GT Concept, 2012 - Automotives Review, Luxury Car ...

  • ?Mazda MX-5 GT Concept, 2012

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept has been inspired by Mazda's podium winning MX-5 GT race programme and its debut at Goodwood is to test customer reaction to a high performance version of the iconic sportscar. Built by race specialists Jota Sport, the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept produces 205bhp from a normally aspirated 2.0-litre Mazda petrol engine which is mated to the car's standard manual gearbox. Suspension has been uprated to improve handling and is adjustable for different track conditions, aerodynamic assistance comes from a carbon front splitter, a rear diffuser and boot spoiler. The exhaust note has been enhanced with a sports exhaust system with a central tailpipe. Recaro seats enhance the driver stability and the interior features a number of carbon enhancements that help reduce weight. For customers who want to acquire the car for track use, it comes equipped with road slicks and body-coloured roll hoops behind the seats.

Joining the Mazda MX-5 GT Concept on the stand was the Mazda Takeri sedan concept, a close indication of the design direction of the future Mazda6, along with the recently launched all-new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV, the first car to adopt Mazda's revolutionary SKYACTIV technology which improves fuel economy and reduces CO2 emissions without compromising driving enjoyment.

Mazda has entered the World's fastest and most powerful MX-5 in the Goodwood hillclimb. Sponsored by SMH Fleet Solutions, Jota Aviation, Total Lubricants and Mazda Financial Services, the Jota Sport Mazda MX-5 GT4 is currently contesting the 2012 British GT Championship and took third in class at Brands Hatch this weekend. Competing against Lotus, Aston Martin, Ginetta and Ferrari racecars, the MX-5 GT boasts a top speed of 160mph and a 0-60 time of just three seconds, making this a very special MX-5.

Drivers for the Goodwood Festival of Speed are regular Mazda racers Mark Ticehurst and Owen Mildenhall and kart racer Jade Paveley, who at just 19 years-old, is one of the youngest drivers at the festival.

The nuanced relationship between language and different types of perception

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? New research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, examines the nuanced relationship between language and different types of perception.

Bilingual Infants Can Tell Unfamiliar Languages Apart

Speaking more than one language can improve our ability to control our behavior and focus our attention, recent research has shown. But are there any advantages for bilingual children before they can speak in full sentences? We know that bilingual children can tell if a person is speaking one of their native languages or the other, even when there is no sound, by watching the speaker's mouth for visual cues. But N?ria Sebasti?n-Gall?s of Universitat Pompeu Fabra and colleagues wanted to know whether bilingual infants could also do this with two unfamiliar languages. They studied 8-month-old infants, half of whom lived in either Spanish- or Catalan-speaking households and half of whom lived in Spanish-Catalan bilingual households.

The researchers looked at whether the infants could discriminate between English and French, two unfamiliar languages, using only visual cues. They found that the bilingual infants could tell the difference between the two languages, while the infants who lived in single-language households could not. These findings suggest that infants who are immersed in bilingual environments are more sensitive to the differences in visual cues associated with the sounds of various languages.

The lead author was N?ria Sebasti?n-Gall?s. The article was published in the September 2012 issue of Psychological Science.

Skilled Deaf Readers Have an Enhanced Perceptual Span in Reading

Though people born deaf are better able to use information from peripheral vision than those who can hear, they have a harder time learning to read. Researchers have proposed that the extra information coming in could distract from, rather than enhance, the process of reading. But no research has actually compared visual attention in reading between hearing and deaf readers. In a new study, Nathalie B?langer of the University of California, San Diego and colleagues investigated this issue by measuring the perceptual span, or the number of letter spaces used when reading, of skilled deaf readers, less-skilled deaf readers, and hearing readers.

The experimenters manipulated the number of letter spaces that the participants saw while reading text on a screen. They found that, compared to the other two groups, skilled deaf readers read fastest when they were given the largest number of letter spaces, showing that they had the largest perceptual span. Regardless, they were able to read just as fast as skilled hearing readers. Contrary to previous hypotheses, these findings suggest that enhanced visual attention and perceptual span are not the cause of reading difficulties common among deaf individuals.

The lead author was Nathalie N. B?langer. The article was published in the July 2012 issue of Psychological Science.

Bill Clinton to campaign for Obama in NH

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Bill Clinton will be back on the campaign trail on behalf of President Barack Obama.

Obama's campaign says the former president will hold an event in New Hampshire on Wednesday, the day of the first presidential debate. Obama and Republican Mitt Romney debate two more times in October.

In 1992, Clinton became the first Democrat to carry New Hampshire in the general election since 1964.

Clinton has become a key surrogate for Obama, particularly on the economy. He delivered a well-regarded speech at the Democratic Party's convention earlier this month, then made a two-day campaign swing for the president in Florida.

The former president is expected to hold more events for Obama in the campaign's closing weeks.

CTV News:

No one was at home in the completed structure, which was still standing when? the fire was extinguished but had a massive hole burned through one side of the? structure.

Authorities say the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, though? witnesses say a crew of workers were sealing the deck of one of the homes with? blowtorches shortly before it started.

Crews had trouble fighting the inferno due to water pressure problems.

iLuv MobiAir iMM377

Most speaker docks, and by most I mean pretty much all, are designed for iOS devices. They integrate the familiar, though soon-to-be-obsolete, 30-pin connector, while Android devices have to connect around back with a 3.5mm cable, if that option is even offered. iLuv offers an Android-friendly alternative in the MobiAir iMM377, a Bluetooth speaker with an adjustable microUSB jack to hold and charge your Android smartphone or small tablet. Audio quality is unimpressive, but at?$119.99 (direct) it's inexpensive, and it is?a rare breed of speaker dock built specifically for Android devices.?

Design
The 4.7-by-9.8-by-2.0-inch (HWD) black, oblong speaker dock looks sparse and simple. The front holds the dock assembly, which includes a microUSB jack on a sliding arm, a rectangular plastic backplate with a springy rubber section, and a fixed rubber pad to keep your Android device steady. Two stiff arms that rotate out to accommodate any size smartphone and many smaller Android tablets. It handled the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD easily, but couldn't accommodate a 10-inch tablet. Two rows of four buttons line the top panel, including Power, Bluetooth, Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, Call/Hang Up, Track Back, and Track Forward. The back of the dock houses the power port and a 3.5mm audio input, which you need to connect any non-Bluetooth device like the original Kindle Fire.?

The microUSB jack is purely for charging the phone and keeping it in place, and since the dock doesn't need to be powered on to charge your phone, it will deliver juice as long as it's plugged in. The iMM377 doesn't have a battery, and while it uses Bluetooth, it's not particularly portable because of its power needs and design. Unlike mobile Bluetooth speakers like the Jawbone Jambox?, Jabra Solemate, or our Editors' Choice, the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox?, the iMM377 doesn't feel like it could withstand much of a drop or splash. This is strictly a desktop/tabletop speaker.

Performance
The iMM377 doesn't sound amazing, but for its price, it's not bad. In my tests, deep sub-bass notes in The Knife's "Silent Shout" distorted terribly, and the kick drums in Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" crunched slightly. Midrange notes sounded warm and clear, like the vocals in Jonathan Coulton's "Re: Your Brains," but higher ranges like the horns in "Dead Man's Party" sounded a bit soft and flat. Bass response is disappointing, even for a speaker this size.

As a speakerphone, the iMM377 fares about as well as any speaker its size and price. When I made calls, voices sounded slightly distorted and staticky on the other end, and my voice was described similarly. I've yet to see any Bluetooth speaker or small speaker dock perform well at this task, though, and even with the quality complaints it fared better than the Jabra Solemate and only a little worse than the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox.

For a combination Bluetooth speaker and Android smartphone charger, you could do worse than the iLuv MobiAir iMM377. It fits most phones and small tablets, it sounds decent, and it's a functional speakerphone. It's not portable, though, and the sound quality won't blow you away. If you want better audio quality and complete wireless convenience, pick up our Editors' Choice Bluetooth speaker, the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, instead. It costs less, can run on battery power all day, and you can use the included microUSB cable to charge your phone (but not through the speaker itself).

Skip the cake? Neural processes at work during self-regulation identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Almost everyone knows the feeling: you see a delicious piece of chocolate cake on the table, but as you grab your fork, you think twice. The cake is too fattening and unhealthy, you tell yourself. Maybe you should skip dessert.

But the cake still beckons.

In order to make the healthy choice, we often have to engage in this kind of internal struggle. Now, scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have identified the neural processes at work during such self-regulation -- and what determines whether you eat the cake.

"We seem to have independent systems capable of guiding our decisions, and in situations like this one, these systems may compete for control of what we do," says Cendri Hutcherson, a Caltech postdoctoral scholar who is the lead author on a new paper about these competing brain systems, which will be published in the September 26 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience.

"In many cases, these systems guide behavior in the same direction, so there's no conflict between them," she adds. "But in other cases, like the all-too-common inner fight to resist the temptation of eating the chocolate cake, they can guide behavior toward different outcomes. Furthermore, the outcome of the decision seems to depend on which of the two systems takes control of behavior."

A large body of evidence shows that people make decisions by assigning different values to the various options, says Antonio Rangel, a professor of economics and neuroscience and the senior author of the paper. To make their decisions, people select the choice with the highest value. "An important and controversial open question -- which this study was designed to address -- is whether there is a single value signal in the brain, or if there are instead multiple value signals with different properties that compete for the control of behavior."

According to the single-value hypothesis, Rangel explains, the ability to say no to the chocolate cake depends on just one system that compares values like healthiness and taste. But the multiple-value hypothesis suggests that there are different systems that process different values. The ability to turn down the cake therefore depends on whether the brain can activate the appropriate system -- the one that evaluates healthiness. If you do not want the cake, it means you place a higher value on health than on taste and your brain acts accordingly.

In the study, the researchers asked 26 volunteers to refrain from eating for four hours prior to being tested. During the experiment, a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine was used to measure the brain activity of the hungry participants while they decided how much they were willing to pay for different snacks, which were shown on a computer screen. The items, including foods like chips and vegetables, varied in taste and healthiness. The subjects were explicitly asked to make their choices in one of three conditions: while attempting to suppress their desire to eat the food, while attempting to increase their desire to eat the food, or while acting normally. The volunteers could do whatever they wanted to control themselves -- for example, focusing on the taste (say, to increase their desire to eat something delicious but unhealthy) or the healthiness of the item (to reduce that urge).

After a four-second period, the participants placed real bids for the right to buy the items that reflected the value they placed on the food.

The researchers found that activity in two different brain areas correlated with how much the participants said they wanted an item, as indicated by their bids. The two regions were the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which sits behind the temples, and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), which is in the middle of the forehead just above the eyes.

Significantly, the two areas played very different roles in the self-regulation process. When volunteers told themselves not to want the food, the dlPFC seemed to take control; there was a stronger correlation between the signals in this area and behavior, while the signals in the vmPFC appeared to have no influence on behavior. When the volunteers encouraged themselves to want the food, however, the role of each brain region flipped. The vmPFC took control while the signals in the dlPFC appeared to have no effect.

The researchers also found that the brain's ability to switch control between these two areas was not instantaneous. It took a couple of seconds before the brain was able to fully ignore the conflicting region. For example, when a volunteer tried to suppress a craving, the vmPFC initially appeared to drive behavior. Only after a couple of seconds -- while the participant tried to rein in his or her appetite -- did the correlation between bids and vmPFC activity disappear and the dlPFC seem to take over.

"This research suggests a reason why it feels so difficult to control your behavior," Hutcherson says. "You've got these really fast signals that say, go for the tempting food. But only after you start to go for it are you able to catch yourself and say, no, I don't want this."

Previous work in Rangel's lab showed that when dieters made similar food choices, their decisions were controlled only by the vmPFC. The researchers speculate that because dieters are more accustomed to self-control, their brains do not show the neural struggle seen in the new study. If that is the case, then it may be possible that people can improve their self-control with more practice.

In addition to Hutcherson and Rangel, the other authors on the Journal of Neuroscience paper are Hilke Plassmann from the ?cole Normale Sup?rieure in France and James Gross of Stanford. The title of the paper is "Cognitive regulation during decision making shifts behavioral control between ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal value systems." This research was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Oscillating microscopic beads could be key to biolab on a chip

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? If you throw a ball underwater, you'll find that the smaller it is, the faster it moves: A larger cross-section greatly increases the water's resistance. Now, a team of MIT researchers has figured out a way to use this basic principle, on a microscopic scale, to carry out biomedical tests that could eventually lead to fast, compact and versatile medical-testing devices.

The results, based on work by graduate student Elizabeth Rapoport and assistant professor Geoffrey Beach, of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), are described in a paper published in the journal Lab on a Chip. MIT graduate student Daniel Montana '11 also contributed to the research as an undergraduate.

The balls used here are microscopic magnetic beads that can be "decorated" with biomolecules such as antibodies that cause them to bind to specific proteins or cells; such beads are widely used in biomedical research. The key to this new work was finding a way to capture individual beads and set them oscillating by applying a variable magnetic field. The rate of their oscillation can then be measured to assess the size of the beads.

When these beads are placed in a biological sample, biomolecules attach to their surfaces, making the beads larger -- a change that can then be detected through the biomolecules effect on the beads' oscillation. This would provide a way to detect exactly how much of a target biomolecule is present in a sample, and provide a way to give a virtually instantaneous electronic readout of that information.

This new technique, for the first time, allows these beads -- each about one micrometer, or millionth of a meter, in diameter -- to be used for precise measurements of tiny quantities of materials. This could, for example, lead to tests for disease agents that would need just a tiny droplet of blood and could deliver results instantly, instead of requiring laboratory analysis.

In a paper published earlier this year in the journal Applied Physics Letters, the same MIT researchers described their development of a technique for creating magnetic tracks on a microchip surface, and rapidly transporting beads along those tracks. (The technology required is similar to that used to read and write magnetic data on a computer's hard disk.) An operational device using this new approach would consist of a small reservoir above the tracks, where the liquid containing the magnetic beads and the biological sample would be placed.

Rather than pumping the fluid and the particles through channels, as in today's microfluidic devices, the particles would be controlled entirely through changes in applied magnetic fields. By controlling the directions of magnetic fields in closely spaced adjacent regions, the researchers create tiny areas with extremely strong magnetic fields, called magnetic domain walls, whose position can be shifted along the track. "We can use the magnetic domain walls to capture and transport the beads along the tracks," Beach says.

In the researchers' most recent paper, Rapoport explains, they have now shown that once a bead is captured, a magnetic field can be used to shake it back and forth. Then, the researchers measure how fast the bead moves as they change the frequency of the oscillation. "The resonant frequency is a function of the bead size," she says -- and could be used to reveal whether the bead has grown in size through attachment to a target biomolecule.

Besides being potentially quicker and requiring a far smaller biological sample to produce a result, such a device would be more flexible than existing chip-based biomedical tests, the researchers say. While most such devices are specifically designed to detect one particular kind of protein or disease agent, this new device could be used for a wide variety of different tests, simply by inserting a fresh batch of fluid containing beads coated with the appropriate reactant. After the test, the material could be flushed out, and the same chip used for a completely different test by inserting a different type of magnetic beads. "You'd just use it, wash it off, and use it again," Rapoport says.

There are dozens of types of magnetic beads commercially available now, which can be coated to react with many different biological materials, Beach explains, so such a test device could have enormous flexibility.

The MIT team has not yet used the system to detect biological molecules. Rather, they used magnetic beads of different sizes to demonstrate that their system is capable of detecting size differences corresponding to those between particles that are bound to biological molecules and those that are not. Having succeeded in this proof of concept, the researchers' next step will be to repeat the experiment using biological samples.

"We now have all the elements required to make a sensing device," Beach says. The next step is to combine the pieces in an operational device and demonstrate its performance.

R. Sooryakumar, a professor of physics at Ohio State University who was not involved in this research, calls this an "innovative approach."

"It is very interesting how the researchers combine technologies that are well understood for applications in computing and data storage, and apply them to something completely different," Sooryakumar says. He adds, "These magnetic devices are potentially valuable tools that could go well beyond how one may normally expect them to be used. The ramifications, for example in food safety and health care, such as pathogen or cancer detection, are indeed exciting."

The research was partly funded by MIT's Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation, and the test devices were made at the MIT NanoStructures Laboratory.

Iranian president rips Israel, US ahead of final UN speech

Eduardo Munoz / Reuters

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses diplomats during a session of the General Assembly on the Rule of Law at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday.

By Robert Windrem, NBC News

In a meeting with reporters that was billed as an exchange of views rather than a press conference, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued his drumbeat of attacks on Israel?s legitimacy on Monday and warned that an Israeli attack on Iran could have ramifications for U.S. bases in the region.

He also pointedly noted that author Salman Rushdie could still face danger as a result of a recently renewed fatwa against him and called the U.S. decision last week to remove the People?s Mujahedin of Iran from the State Department?s list of terrorist organizations a ?gift? to the Iranian government.

Ahmadinejad was in New York for his eighth -- and final ?U.N. General Assembly meeting as Iran?s president. Ahmadinejad, who will exit the presidency in June after two terms, will address the General Assembly on Wednesday.

As he has in the past, Ahmadinejad dismissed Israel both as a threat to Iran and as a legitimate government. Referring to recent military threats by Israeli government officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over Iran?s nuclear program, Ahmadinejad said that they are not of ?utmost importance? to him or Iran.

?Whether he's bluffing doesn't come into the equation for us,? Ahmadinejad said of Netanyahu. ?Put a map in front of you, an atlas. Iran has been Iran for the last seven to ten thousand years. They've been occupying that territory for 60 years. They have no roots there in history. They do not enter the equation for Iran.?

But while Reuters quoted Ahmadinejad as calling for Israel to be ?eliminated,? the official translation of his remarks indicated that he steered clear of? the fiery rhetoric he is best known for. ??

Reminded ?that he was quoted as saying? several years ago that Israel should be wiped off the map, the Iranian president responded that he only wants Iran's neighbor to change its behavior. ?We say occupation must be done away with," he said. "We say war seeking and war mongering must be eliminated. We say threats must be eliminated.? Threatening manners and ways must be eliminated. Destroying people?s homes on the head of their wives and children must be done away with and eliminated.?

Ahmadinejad added that more important is ?the political atmosphere that allows them to threaten -- and not be condemned for it. Where is the organization that rules the world today that allows them to act so rudely??

Iran subtlety criticized U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon earlier this month for condemning Iranian officials? comments on Israel while saying nothing about Israeli officials threats against Iran. Iran?s ambassador called Ban?s criticism an ?irony.?

Asked whether Iran would go after U.S. targets should Israel attack Iran, Ahmadinejad said that if an attack does come, ?All equations would see a deep change.?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad discusses freedom of expression, insults against Islam and the fatwa against author Salman Rushdie in a meeting with reporters on Monday, two days before his final address to the U.N. General Assembly as president.

Ahmadinejad also was asked by "New Yorker" editor David Remnick if the fatwa against Rushdie still stood.? The fatwa, first issued by the late Ayatollah Sayyed Ruhollah Musavi Khomenei following Rushdie?s publication of ?The Satanic Verses,? was withdrawn in 1998, but recently, an Iranian religious foundation renewed it an offered $3.3 million to any Muslim who kills Rushdie.

?Where is he now?? a smiling Ahmadinejad repeatedly asked Remnick, who has published Rushdie in the pages of his magazine. ?If he is in the United States, you should not broadcast that, for his own safety.?

The Iranian president also fielded a question about the U.S. State Department?s decision Friday to remove the People?s Mujahedin of Iran, an Iranian dissident group commonly known as the MEK, from the U.S. list of terrorist groups, permitting them to operate freely in the United States.

Claiming the MEK has killed 16,000 Iranian civilians and ?is a terrorist group,? Ahmadinejad said that the U.S. hurt itself with the Iranian people by recognizing a group he said had ?no value.?

They gave us a gift. We got result for free. We regret their (State Department) action but should be grateful. They work to our advantage.?

Seldom shy about sharing his opinion, Ahmadinejad nevertheless declined to comment on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney?s criticism of President Barack Obama for failing to meet with Netanyahu. ?We believe U.S.? elections are a domestic issue and we will not in any way ? take a position,? he said. ?We believe Americans are not war-seeking people and they do wish to have friendly relations with other people.?

HBT: Clemens won't rule out 2013 comeback

Roger Clemens has shut himself down for the rest of 2012, but he hasn?t completely given up on the dream of one day returning to the major leagues.

The 50-year-old right-hander will be in?Kissimmee, Florida with the Astros next spring to fulfill his personal services contract and may be more than just a special instructor if his arm cooperates in workouts leading up to the opening of camp.

Via Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle:

?I might be going again here in February or something like that,? Clemens said Saturday. ?I?ll be throwing. I don?t think it?s going to be competitive, but you guys know with me, I?m never going to shut the door on anything. Who knows what might happen.?

Clemens threw seven scoreless innings over two starts earlier this summer for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner hasn?t pitched in the majors since the 2007 season.

72 holes of great public golf in Atlanta

Courtesy of Bear's Best-Atlanta

The 13th hole at Bear's Best-Atlanta.

The PGA Tour makes its final stop of the season at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. If you're in town, here are four public-access courses you should check out.

BEAR'S BEST-ATLANTA: This is one of two Nicklaus designs (the other is in Las Vegas) where Jack has taken 18 of his best-designed holes and meticulously constructed exact replicas. Golf Magazine's Travelin' Joe raves about the two par 3s from PGA National and Muirfield Village, but the course also includes spectacular holes from Sherwood Country Club, Shoal Creek and Gleneagles in Scotland-home of the 2014 Ryder Cup. ($69-$114, clubcorp.com, 45 minutes from Atlanta)

?

THE FROG AT THE GEORGIAN: This certified Audubon Sanctuary and Tom Fazio design debuted in 1998 west of downtown and begins with a bang: the 457-yard, par-4 opening hole is arguably the toughest on the course. Water is in play on a few holes but large bunkers are the more prevalent hazard. ($40-$85, golfthefrog.com. 1 hour from Atlanta)

ECHELON: Originally known as the Georgia Tech Club, this 2006 Rees Jones design is a straightforward layout that comes with plenty of serious elevation changes, starting off with a par-4 opener that tumbles downward to a large green. You will need to nail down your distances here thanks to many uphill and downhill approaches. ($78-100, echelonliving.com, 50 minutes from Atlanta)

COBBLESTONE GOLF COURSE: Likely your best bargain among this quartet, Cobblestone underwent dramatic renovations in 2010 that included entirely new Bermuda greens as well as some additional bunkering. Reviews since have been overwhelmingly positive. While you may not be pulling every club in your bag, eight holes along Lake Acworth, including some daring par 3s, make Cobblestone a worthy value. ($56-$65, cobblestonegolf.com, 40 minutes from Atlanta)

Self Improvement | Learning How To Laugh At Yourself Builds Your ...

By Lois McElravy -

Studies reveal that 2 out of 3 people suffer from low self-esteem. If you are sitting at lunch with 2 of your friends, only one of you has healthy self-esteem. Who is it?

The answer may turn out to be a matter of perception. Our true beliefs and inner feelings of self-worth can be very different from those we reveal openly to others. Many of us are experts at displaying an outward appearance of confidence and self-acceptance, while feeling insecure or inadequate on the inside.

Accepting the Unchangeable

All of us have some aspects of our physical features or personality that don?t meet our approval. Jeanne Robertson, one of America?s most loved and respected humorists, tells us, ?We can never truly learn to laugh at ourselves until we learn to accept the things about ourselves that are either impossible or impractical to be changed.?

These unique characteristics often have the potential to be funny, if viewed through humorous eyes. When we identify and accept our uniqueness, we are able to laugh about our idiosyncrasies or shortcomings. Easily said, but not so easily done.

Is something silently eroding your self-esteem?

David Granirer, PsychoTherapist/Stand-Up Comic, suggests a ?contrary attitude? exercise for finding the humor in your life and using it to build self-esteem. You take something about yourself or your life that you consider negative, talk about how much you love it, and why you love it.

For example, I went through a period of misplacing my car keys. Instead of belittling my behavior, I remarked, ?I don?t mind frantically looking for my car keys. I love the challenge of a scavenger hunt, and the thrill of racing against the clock to be on time.?

Separating ?what you do? from ?who you are? provides the distance you need to find the humor in your situation and Q-TIP (Quit Taking It Personal). Our level of self-esteem is often associated with what we are capable of doing, or by our achievements. When we don?t meet our own expectations, the negative self-talk we inflict upon ourselves results in lower self-esteem.

After my brain injury, the planning and preparation of meals was difficult and exhausting. The failed attempts were hard on my self-esteem. For years I felt like I was failing as a wife and mother, in the kitchen. Joking about my loss of cooking ability, helps me accept myself, just as I am.

?I used to be a good cook. Now, it?s good if I cook!?

The ability to laugh at ourselves allows us the opportunity to embrace our flaws, and promotes self-acceptance. It does not include harmful putdowns, ridicule or negative sarcasm. Nor are we advertising that we are defective, rather we are demonstrating that we are human.

Humor is a positive coping mechanism that not only improves our mood, it builds our self-esteem. Unfortunately, we often resort to all kinds of unhealthy coping mechanisms like drinking, smoking, eating, overworking, etc. to make ourselves feel good. While these habits offer temporary boosts, they further undermine our self-esteem.

?I may do stupid things, but I am not stupid!?

Remember, it?s not just what you do that defines who you are. More over, it?s how you handle what you do, that defines who you really are.

Lois McElravy, Lessons from Lois, works with individuals and organizations who want to learn how to effectively use humor, so they can handle the demands and pressures of work and home, maintain a flexible perspective, produce positive outcomes, and have more fun.

Learning to laugh and ?hangin? on with humor? rescued Lois from the distress and despair surrounding her daily life, and initiated her recovery from a brain injury. Her universal message offers hope, motivates participants to be faithful to do the small things, and conquer their challenges one day at a time.

HUGE Concerns over the Social Security (Benefit Categories and ...

I, along with many other Kiwis and home educators, have huge concerns about this Bill.

First I would like to say that the Government, is moving in the right direction with regard to tackling the attitude of welfare entitlement. I agree with restricting and reducing benefits. ?I believe that they should be a hand up, not a hand out.

But we have huge concerns about how the Government is going about this. We need to take a proper look at the Bill but in the mean time here are my quick glance concerns:

  • attend 15 hours a week Early Childhood Education (ECE) from age 3
  • attend school from age five or six
  • enrol with a General Practitioner
  • complete core WellChild/Tamariki Ora checks

If you are not on a benefit of any kind (to name a few that the above will affect widow/widowers, sickness, unemployment and DPB) look what is also being worked on by the Government.

Result 2: Early childhood education: In 2016, 98 per cent of children starting school will have participated in quality early childhood education.

Result 3: Immunisation: Increase infant immunisation rates so that 95 per cent of eight month olds are fully immunised by December 2014 and this is maintained?until 30 June 2017.

Result 4: Assaults on children: By 2017, we aim to halt the rise in children experiencing physical abuse and reduce current numbers by five per cent. ?- (Why is Result 4 one ONLY 5%?)

Now is the time to make known our concerns.

Yes, we all do need to put in submissions but lets not be too hasty in sending them off ? we have until 1 November 2012. I think we need to have a lot of discussion so that we have thought through all the issues so that we make the best submissions that we can. I also want to get a couple of home educating lawyers to look at the Bill as well.

Some initial discussion:

1. Some people have said that home educators need to ask, in their submissions, for an exemption from putting their children into an ECE. Please, please, please do not ask for this.

Children should be at home with their parents unless parents choose to send them to an ECE. This MUST be kept as a choice.

2. Tying this bill to education of our children.

There is a lot more discussion going on on Face Book and many of the email discussion groups but for now you can see from the above comments that we need to seriously look at what we put in our submission. This is NOT only a Home Schooling issue. This is for every family in New Zealand. As it is only the beginning. If this goes through for beneficiaries then watch out this could soon become law for all 3 year olds and above.

This bill amends the Social Security Act 1964. It is part of a package of reforms to shift the focus of the benefit system towards encouraging and supporting beneficiaries to move into paid work.

Important Dates

Bill introduced 17 September 2012

1st reading 20 September 2012

Submissions due 1 November 2012

Report due 20 March 2013

My personal initial response

I am a widow with three children still at home who are 14, 11 and the youngest has just turned 7. I also have 5 older children. I am not on the widow?s benefit.

Historically the Church looked after widows and the fatherless.

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. 1 Timothy 5v4

If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows. 1 Timothy 5v16

The problem we have today is that the Government is requiring such high taxes that it makes it so much harder for families and the Church to look after widows and the fatherless. I have had people telling me that I am crazy not to take the widow?s benefit because I have paid my taxes I am entitled to it. This attitude is now ingrained in the community and also in many Churches.

The Government took on this roll and it has been abused by many people. Now the Government has to be careful how they pull out of supporting widows and the fatherless (who so very often are not fatherless but have irresponsible fathers.)

There are many families who are on benefits for various reasons who want to be responsible and cannot find a way to get off the benefit because the Churches are not helping in this area. These families also see that it is their responsibility to be home educating their own children. The Bible calls parents to educate, protect, train up, and prepare their children for adulthood. These parents are not abusing the Government system ? they are working at training up responsible citizens for New Zealand. They want to get off the benefit as soon as they can but also want to be the best parents they can for their children by home educating them.

A lot of home educating parents have contacted me over the last few days really concerned about this new policy. They want to continue home educating their children. This is a full time job. These parents take this job very seriously. It is a concern that they are being required to work for 15 hours a week when they already have a full time job educating their children. You might say that this is a lifestyle choice but we do not understand it as such. We believe that it is the parent?s responsibility to be educating their children not the Governments. Unfortunately there are a lot of irresponsible parents so there seems to be a need for the Government to be involved in schools. But the Government should not take this responsibility away from parents who desire to educate their own children.

It is false economy to put children in day care and expect the parent to work at the same time ? it is cheaper to have the mother at home with the child or children and use the day care allotment for someone who wants to use it.

Therefore it is with great concern that home educating parents on the benefit are being asked to work (or study) for 15 hours a week when they are already very busy home educating their children responsibly.

We have even greater concern about the move to have 3, 4, and 5 year olds being required to be in ECE for 15 hours a week. Over the years there has been a lot of research that children do much better at home than in Early Childhood centres. Here are a couple of links

http://hef.org.nz/2012/home-v-ece/

and

http://hef.org.nz/2008/value-of-parents-praised/

My concerns are:

1. That home educators be able to continue to home educate their children while on a benefit without having to work or study.

2. That home educators and other concerned families be able to keep their preschoolers at home and not send them to ECE.
