Phelps splits with ex-Miss California

Olympic hero Michael Phelps split with his longtime girlfriend, former Miss California Nicole Johnson.

The champion swimmer and the brunette dated on and off for several years, and she traveled with him in July to the FINA World Championships in Shanghai.

Sources said the couple broke up a few weeks ago, and Phelps is telling friends he is single.

Baltimore-born Phelps, who is in training for the 2012 Olympics, spent New Year's Eve in New York, partying with six guy friends and six girls at Chelsea hotspot Avenue.

Meanwhile Johnson, according to her Twitter feed, spent the night in Los Angeles with friends.

A rep for Phelps did not respond to calls regarding the split.
