Debt Financing for Business

Whether you?re preparing to launch a startup or want to grow your business, one thing is for certain: You?re going to need money. Equity and debt financing are two different financial strategies: Taking on business debt means borrowing money for your business, whereas gaining equity entails injecting your own or other stakeholders? cash into your company. The major benefit for debt financing for business, unlike with equity financing, is that you?ll retain full ownership. The interest on business loans is also tax-deductible, and you?ll build your credit. A traditional bank loan is?obtainable ? so long as you have good credit, enough equity to cover the payments and you?re not already carrying heavy debts. Banks are also reluctant to loan to unestablished businesses.?Commercial finance companies are another good source for lending money and are willing to fund riskier ventures to businesses that don?t have solid financials. These loans are ?based on collateral and include asset based lending, inventory financing, and purchase order funding, to name a few. There are reputable firms, like Business Capital, who can find the most intelligently structured and affordable loan to suit your particular situation.

Source: Forbes.com, June 13 2012, Kate Harrison

Every start up has one thing in common ? a need for cash. A good entrepreneur is extremely resourceful (we beg, borrow and barter for everything we can), but at the end of the day there are some things only money can buy. For this reason, CEOs spend a lot of time and effort worrying about money and trying to raise capital for their idea. But not every company is suited for venture, and even if yours is, other commercial financing options might be better for your company in the long run.

There are two primary categories of funding: debt financing and equity financing. In their simplest forms, debt financing is when a startup agrees to pay back a loan with a predetermined timeframe and interest rate and equity financing is when the business sells ownership shares in exchange for funding. There are many different types of instruments to accomplish these two ends, with options, conversions (forced or otherwise), warrants and many other negotiable terms. However, these nuances are material for another day, because before you can even think about a term sheet, you need to understand the larger funding landscape and make a decision about which sources of funding are the best match for your business plan and needs.

To help wade through the business funding landscape quagmire, I called upon, Zo? Gorman, a talented Yale student, to create this simple chart.

Debt Financing Options:

Banks.Local banks continue lending money when larger banks might slow transactions ?PRO You won?t have to pay interest on a line of credit until you start spending the money.
?CON Obtaining a loan could be difficult; high interest rates. Banks also want personal guarantees, which means personal risk.?
Credit Unions.Non-profit, member owned institutions can help finance your start-up. ?PRO Non-profit institutions with reasonable interest rates.
?CON Startupowners must have excellent credit and track record.?
Peer-to-Peer Lending.?Debt-based lending transactions occur directly between individuals through websites such as Prosper.com and LendingClub.com. ?PRO Startups with good credit rating might be able to negotiate lower interest rates.
?CON Loans above $25,000 are often unavailable. Loan and company information is publically available on the internet.?
Crowd Funding.Ideas are funded online through a public platform and investors are repaid in goods or services such as inventory, equipment or real estate. ?PRO Asset-based financing does not relinquish control of the company.?
?CON This method normally does not raise enough revenue per investor, $25,000 or less. With programs such as kickstarter.com you do not get any of the funding unless you raise the entire amount.?
Credit Cards.?Forty-four percent of companies advance payments with credit cards. ?PRO Cheap, convenient money.
?CON Interest rateswill leap up for long-term financing past a month at a time, especially after multiple late payments.?

?

SBA Loans.?The?Small Business Administration?will guarantee a proportion of loans made by private investors. ?PRO Helps small businesses gain additional funding without going to traditional banks.
?CON Startup must prove sufficient cash flow for repayment, which is hard for most young companies to do.?
Retirement?Funds. The?ERISA?law stipulates constituents can invest existing IRA or 401k funds to purchase a business. ?PRO Use of retirement funds for business does not incur early distribution penalties.?
?CON Risky to the individual?s future livelihood if the start-up fails.?

?

Equity Financing Options:

Factoring. The firm sells its accounts receivables to a company at a discount, and the company assumes responsibility for collecting the receivables. ?PRO The start-up can obtain funds quickly without plans or statements.
?CON Factoring companies can charge high fees., depending on the risk of the receivable and you have to have ongoing business with a volume of receivables.?

?

Angel investors.Private investors that finance start-ups for equity ownership stake. ?PRO Open to lending smaller amounts for longer time periods; lenders specialize in an industry and might be willing to take on higher-risk for potential profit.
?CON Angel investors can take a significant stake in your company depending on the terms. Investors will investigate cash flow and credit standing, and finding ?a band of angel investors? can take time.

State Investment or Grants.?Many states now have their own investment arms and are writing loans and grants to stimulate job growth.??PRO?The terms of these investments tend to be very friendly for businesses and some of the programs like CT?s Small?Business?Express Program provides grants and other incentives that put risk-free money in the hands of entrepreneurs.??CON?These invetments often come with conditions on how the money can be used which can lock you into a plan. They may also require up to 5 years of residency in the state following the funding.

As a starting entrepreneur I encourage you to use this graph as a starting place for deeper investigation and to pick your path carefully. Venture funding is sexy but it is not appropriate for most companies.?Many paths can lead to success, but which source or sources of funding you pursue will impact what that success looks like and your experience along the way.

Travel and Leisure Group Celebrates 20 years of Successful ...

Travel & Leisure GroupSUDBURY, ENGLAND (June 14, 2012) ? Congratulations are in order this week as Travel & Leisure group celebrate their 20th Birthday, making them the longest-running timeshare resales company in Europe. The Sudbury-based timeshare reseller has been trading since 1992 and has succeeded where many companies have failed; working through the turbulent economic conditions and contending with the negative press which is often associated with timeshare resales.

Over the 20 years since Travel & Leisure?s birth the company has gone from strength-to-strength, expanding from its home in the East of England to encompass six different international offices in Portugal, Russia, Norway, Taiwan, Romania and the Baltic Regions. In addition to these international offices, Travel & Leisure also has French, German, Italian and Spanish speaking timeshare specialists to handle the growing number of enquiries from Europe and the rest of the world.

Established in the early 90s by Maria Mills-Farinas and business partner John Hepplewhite, Travel & Leisure was destined to become a thoroughly international organisation through a combination of Mrs Mills-Farinas? language skills and legal knowledge and Mr Hepplewhite?s influence and global business network.

?I?d always felt there was a need for a reliable, independent international resale brokerage? Mrs Mills remembers, ?offering buyers and sellers from all over the world secure transactions and peace of mind, knowing their money and ownership documents are safe in solicitors? hands. We wanted to build a truly international company, with professional multi-lingual staff, that people could trust to take care of their resale needs.?

Travel & Leisure are determined to continue to build the reputation and sustained customer-focus attitudes towards business, which has underpinned the last two decades of trading. ?We always look for ways to improve and expand our business. As you know, the resale market isn?t an easy one, and with timeshare things can get stale. We have a no-pressure resale service and that?s important. Buyers have time to think about it in the comfort of their own home, there?s no cold calling or invitations to buy so they never feel under pressure. They can choose what suits them and they are in control.?

Recognition by RDO (formerly the OTE), TATOC, ARDA, ATHOC the UK Timeshare Council and the British Chamber of Commerce coupled with 20 years of business are all badges Travel & Leisure are very proud of.

In 2011 Travel & Leisure group announced sales over just under ?1.5 million showing a constant effort to improve their services and maintain the high standards which have been set over the last two decades. Today Travel & Leisure Group stands strong, and is upgrading their computer systems in order to guarantee continued growth and provide the best service to their customers in the many years to come.

Don't Go Overboard Staging Your Property In Indianapolis Real Estate

When is definitely great to help make your Indianapolis the property market attractive enough to immediately get a great impression for audience, some sellers usually tend to overdo the family home staging process and result in paying for upwards of what is critical, proving that only some home staging skills pay off perhaps up to you think on many occasions they?d. Here are just a few things that you could keep in mind when you?re staging your property that can be purchased.

Carpets tend to accumulate a considerable amount of dirt, and that might just be the motivation you want to get a latest one, although you have to know that buyers are probably going to replace it the pioneer chance they pick up. With this in the mind, you might plan to consider taking through your old rugs and refinishing the floor, as this suggests a feeling of potential concerning property that buyers generally seek.

Retiling your bathroom used just for the staging is virtually always going as being a bad idea. Remember of doing this only for quite possibly the most extreme cases. While it?s an amazing thing in order that the bathroom feels comfortable enough, you might incur an excessive amount of an expense if organization try and insure that it is look like something on a 5-star hotel. A basic cleaning and mild replacements of some fixtures can achieve the bathroom natural treasures.

New appliances are really a great investment to make sure you stage your Indianapolis home, but only once you don?t spend a ridiculous amount of. Top-of-the-line appliances are certainly a good quality selling point, although it?s not something a large amount of buyers consider in the form of major factor with regards to a purchase. Novice home buyers, for occasion, tend to want to buy their home products themselves. Tip: get only the standard appliances; the spot approximately presentable and low-priced is what you?re getting.

Ask your real estate agent for help. A reliable Indianapolis realtor have the opportunity to tell you more about what you need to do to stage your premises effectively and at not too large of an outlay. Swiss court eases up on Street View privacy concerns, Google says it's pleased with the ruling

It's no secret Google's been involved in a few privacy-related kerfuffles around the globe, but some would say those are just the burdens attached to being one of the big-guns in the industry. Still, Big G can go home to Mountain View a happy camper today, as the Swiss Federal Tribunal has decided to ease up on the company's usage of its Street View technology in the country. Per the ruling, however, Google will have to make adjustments to its viewing methods, things like making it easier for folks to manually blur images available on Street View, and full anonymity around hospitals, schools, prisons and courts. Naturally, Google says it's quite pleased with the outcome and that it plans to "look at the ruling closely, discuss it with the federal data protection commissioner and examine what options are available."

Japan rescues British rower hit in Pacific storm

TOKYO ?

The Japanese coast guard Friday rescued a British adventurer caught in a storm while rowing solo across the Pacific, and another British rower was awaiting rescue.

Sarah Outen's blog said her boat rolled over and was damaged in the storm during her attempted journey around the world.

On Friday, she tweeted: "Hooray 4 Japanese always being early!" That was followed by an announcement that she was safe on the rescue ship. The coast guard said she was walking on her own and appeared relatively healthy.

She had signaled for help on Thursday morning 900 kilometers (560 miles) off Japan's northeastern coast, saying water was seeping through a hole in her boat, according to the coast guard.

Another vessel was headed to rescue Charlie Martell, who got caught up in the same storm. His boat, Blossom, was 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) off northeastern Japan, the coast guard said.

Outen embarked on her planned 2 1/2-year journey in April 2011. She is trying to circle the globe using only human power, cycling, rowing and kayaking more than 32,000 kilometers (20,000 miles).

Martell said on his website that he planned to row "solo and unsupported" across the Pacific. The coast guard's ship was expected to reach Martell's boat Saturday.

Outen likely won't return to shore until Saturday, the coast guard said.

DICE+ wants to team with screens and usher in an era of powered board games (hands-on)

DICE wants to team with screens and usher in an era of powered board games handson

We learned about DICE+, the digital chance cube, just before E3, and today we finally got to give it a few rolls and find out a bit more about DICE+ from the folks who made it. It's an inch-sized cube with a soft-touch rubbery finish that's packed with a Bluetooth radio and a rechargeable battery. For now, it juiced up via microUSB, but an induction charging version is also in the works. Its power cell grants up to 20 hours of continuous rolling, or a little over a week for non-gambling degenerates. Speaking of, the cube's maker, GIC, said a major point of emphasis in the cube's design was getting the balance of the thing just right to ensure the randomness of DICE + results -- and it's even spoken with casino companies about their tolerance requirements in that area. While DICE + may find its way onto craps tables eventually, for now, its maker's focused on what it calls "powered board games."

You see, while we're all familiar with board game mechanics -- roll a die/spin a wheel and move your game piece accordingly -- they don't translate well to the digital realm. People don't trust a computer to give truly random results, and tapping a screen to "roll" dice gets boring quickly. That's the beauty of DICE+, players get all the advantages of a digital board game, like animations and greater interactivity, without the aforementioned downside because it engages them in a satisfying, familiar fashion. Join us after the break for our impressions, and a bit more info about this throwback gadget.

Intel's Going to Make Your Laptop Charge Your Phone Wirelessly [Video]

Charging your phone sucks. But if all you had to do was set it down next to your laptop, which you probably do anyway, well, that wouldn't be so bad. More »

Shaped catalysts spark longer, faster-growing, rule-breaking nanowires

CLEVELAND A research team at Case Western Reserve University has found that gold catalysts shaped in the form of a cube, triangle, or other higher order structures grow nanowires about twice as fast and twice as long compared to wires grown with the more typical spherically-shaped catalysts.

This finding could prove useful to other scientists who are growing nanowires to build sensors fast enough to detect changes in red and white blood cells. These sensors in turn could help identify various forms of cancer in the body. The wires are so small as small as one-5,000th the width of a human hair - they could also be used to build the next generation of "invisible" computer chips.

Xuan Gao, assistant professor of physics, and R. Mohan Sankaran, associate professor of chemical engineering, describe their work in the paper, "Shape-Controlled Au Particles for InAs Nanowire Growth," published in the journal Nano Letters.

Their research team included Case Western Reserve graduate students Pin Ann Lin and Dong Liang and Hathaway Brown Upper School student Samantha Reeves.

The researchers tested growth using both the preferentially-shaped and spherical catalysts under identical conditions to rule out error in the comparisons.

They suggest that the long accepted model of vapor-liquid-solid, or VLS, growth is incomplete, and that more tests are needed in order to fully understand the process.

Here's why: the researchers found that that the nanowires grown with the triangular catalyst have a much thicker layer of the metal Indium than the VLS nanowire growth model predicts.

The finding suggests a correlation between Indium concentration and growth enhancement. The team made the discovery when they beamed electrons at the nanowires to release high energy x-rays, a process called energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The magnitude of these energy bursts were used to determine chemical properties of the nanowires.

To grow nanowires, the researchers combined elements such as indium and arsenic, from rows 4 and 5 of the periodic table of elements. Elements from these rows bond to the gold particle to create a semiconductor that neither allows great flow of electric current nor greatly prevents its flow. This is called the "bottom-up method" which Gao describes as truly like "growing a plant from a seed."

Nanowires can also be made "top-down" with precise cuts on a large piece of semiconducting material, reducing it to a tiny structure of wires.

The disadvantage to this, Sankaran explains, is that cutting wires smaller than around 45 nm, which is the current standard in computer chips, "is impossible if we are using a machine. But if we were to grow the wires from chemical compounds we could make them as small as 10 nm, meaning we could fit more wires in a smaller space for greater speed."

However the bottom-up method only produces wires in bunches as opposed to the large interwoven structures made from the top-down method of cutting. The challenge is combining chemically-grown wires in ways that they work in complex electronics such as computer chips or highly-sensitive sensors.

Both Gao and Sankaran describe their research efforts as truly collaborative. Sankaran makes catalysts of different shapes to grow the nanowires, and Gao tests the properties of these wires and connects them to possible uses in the field.

This duo plans to continue exploring the correlation between catalyst shape and other structural characteristics of the wires in order to further develop the VLS model, and move closer to implementing nanowires in new technology.
