Twitter hostilities between players from Oakland A's, Texas Rangers ends peacefully

OAKLAND ? The social media hostility on Twitter between Rangers pitcher Matt Garza and A's second baseman Eric Sogard and his wife, Kaycee, is over, apparently with no lasting damage.

Garza was unhappy that Sogard bunted home a run against him in the seventh inning Saturday. The A's were up 3-2 at the time, but Garza hadn't allowed a run since the first inning, and the A's decided to exploit the fact that Garza isn't particularly good at fielding his position.

He yelled at Sogard at the time, and after the game, a 4-2 A's win, Garza responded to Kaycee Sogard's tweets about Eric's successful bunt with a series misogynistic of tweets that talked about baseball being ``a man's game,'' suggesting that Kaycee Sogard ``keep your trap shut,'' and telling Eric Sogard ``to keep your wife out of it.''

On Sunday, Garza issued an apology on his twitter feed and apologized when talking to the media.

The Sogards were with A's teammates and their spouses at an A's charity bowling event Saturday night while the altercation took place. Sogard said Sunday morning he had a couple of teammates mention something to him during the bowling, but he didn't get the full picture until he and Kaycee went home.

``We got home last night and talked about it and we thought it basically it was pretty funny,'' he said. ``It was like `Can you believe this is happening?' But it did happen.''

Garza's media apology and his twitter apology were basically the same.

``All I want to say is I let my competitive spirit cross outside the lines, and that shouldn't happen,'' Garza said. ``I let my passion, my fire, carry over, and that's not the way this game should be played. For that, I apologize to the Sogards for anything that was said through my Twitter. Regret what happened and looking forward to a great game today.''

Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine, who called Garza's twitter outburst ``totally inappropriate,'' called the A's to personally apologize. And he and several members of the Texas front office talked with Garza, who was recently acquired from the Cubs to beef up the Rangers' starting rotation.

``We had a conversation with him (this morning.),'' Levine said. ``I certainly did, and individually a number of people have had discussions with him. He's been very conciliatory. Those are the type of conversations where you expect to sit down and work out some emotions. He was contrite right from the outset of the conversation.''

One of Levine's suggestions to Garza was that he get off Twitter, and he said Garza ``seemed to go along with it.''

For their part the A's aren't asking any of their players to tone down their tweets in any way and manager Bob Melvin said he didn't see any long-term impact.

``Will it make the rivalry (more intense?) I don't know,'' Melvin said. ``It's already at a pretty high intensity.''

Rangers manager Ron Washington, a very old school guy, not only isn't on Twitter (Melvin was for a bit in spring training but isn't now), but he said he wasn't exactly sure what Twitter was.

``What's Twitter anyway?'' Washington asked. ``People's opinions?''

The Texas manager said he didn't expect there to be any carryover and that he wouldn't ask his players to abandon Twitter.

Was it a missed opportunity for McConnell's GOP challenger to miss Republican events?

The tea party challenger to U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell gave a solid first showing from the Fancy Farm picnic, but Louisville businessman Matt Bevin may have missed an opportunity to win over Republicans by skipping the GOP?s breakfast and dinner speaking engagements on Friday and Saturday morning.

The annual Fancy Farm Picnic provides candidates a chance to mingle with voters and be heard by the state ? and, in this year?s case, the nation with a broadcast on CSPAN. While Bevin had a strong speech, he did offer McConnell?s campaign some fodder when he reached out to the the Democratic portion of the crowd and said, ?You can cheer for this too. You want a better life. We?re on the same team, I?ll tell you that much.?

Beyond the picnic, though, the local GOP events in Western Kentucky leading up to the speaking event have become nearly as important for candidates.

Republicans held a chicken dinner in Calvert City the Friday before Fancy Farm in which many of the party?s most dedicated activists attended. The even bigger event was the Saturday morning pre-Fancy Farm breakfast in Mayfield, in which as many as 400 Republicans packed the cafeteria of the Graves County High School.

Bevin, who will need to win over establishment Republicans to win the party?s nomination, said he was not asked to attend either event. Kentucky has closed primary elections which only members of the party can select the nominee.

An organizer at the chicken dinner told Pure Politics that if Bevin had asked to speak or showed up, he could have taken the stage.

?I was asked to be (at the Fancy Farm Picnic). It was the only place in the Fancy Farm arena that I was asked to be in the last two days, and that?s OK,? Bevin said. ?I think my message will be heard loud and clear?I think the people of Kentucky are hungry for a change. They are tired of 30-years of representation by a guy who does not share Kentucky values.?

A campaign spokesperson for Bevin told Pure Politics he attended the RedState convention in New Orleans on Friday.

McConnell did not attend the GOP chicken dinner either, but he did address the activists at the breakfast in Mayfield.

Phil Moffett, the 2011 Republican gubernatorial primary contender who attracted strong tea party support, said he thought both Bevin and McConnell were missing an opportunity to share their message by not attending the GOP chicken dinner in Calvert City on Friday.

?I believe in competition, and I think since we don?t have term limits we need primaries?so we in the Republican party can see what we can choose from,? Moffet said outside of the Chicken Dinner. ?We need to challenge ourselves and think about the issues and debate those issues, and try to become a better party through that process.?

Western Kentucky University junior Dalton Workman, who is active in the GOP , also attended the Chicken Dinner Friday night.

?I think anybody that wants to run for office should have the right to speak if they want to. I don?t know if he wanted to speak and he wasn?t allowed to or what all happened there,? Workman said.

Los Angeles Earthquake Today 2013 Shakes Yorba Linda, So California

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) ? A Los Angeles earthquake today 2013 has struck Yorba Linda and Southern California. The Los Angeles earthquake today August 3, 2013 is one of two quakes striking the southland overnight. No reports of injuries have yet to be indicated by local news.

Officials tell news that a 2.5 magnitude Los Angeles earthquake began today in the early morning hours. The quake started just after 3:06 AM PST. The quake was shallow as well. USGS indicates to news that the quake started only six miles below ground level. As a result the quake could be felt across the region.

USGS indicates to news that the Los Angeles earthquake started near an active fault line, roughly one mile east of Yorba Linda. The quake was four miles east of Placentia and six miles east of Brea. The quake also began seven miles southwest of Chino Hills.

Also overnight, a quake struck Frazier Park. It was seven miles north of town. Officials tell news that it started twenty-four miles southwest of Arvin and twenty-six miles southwest of Lamont. Reps also tell news that the quake was thirty-three miles south of Bakersfield as well. No damage has been reported by local news.

U.S. Trade Representative overturns ban on some Apple iPad, iPhone sales

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Apple Inc may continue to import and sell certain older iPads and iPhones made to use on AT&T's network, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said on Saturday in overturning a ban issued by a trade panel.

Froman overturned a June decision by the International Trade Commission, which ruled that some Apple products infringed a patent owned by Samsung Electronics and ordered Apple to stop selling the popular devices.

"This decision is based on my review of the various policy considerations ... as they relate to the effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers," Froman said in his decision.

The U.S. ITC said that Apple had infringed on a Samsung patent that allows the ability of devices to transmit multiple services simultaneously and correctly through 3G wireless technology.

The iPhone accounts for about half of Apple's revenue. While the company doesn't disclose sales data on individual smartphones and tablet models, the current version of the iPhone typically accounts for the biggest chunk of iPhone shipments of more than 100 million units annually.

The case at the International Trade Commission was No. 337-794.

For many teenagers, a summer job might involve work at a local retail store or maybe a stint in fast food.

Kameron Brown, who recently turned 16, has opted for something a bit different.

Brown, who will be a junior at Edsel Ford this fall, is in his second summer with the Detroit Police Athletic League. As a part-time PAL employee, he works to clean up and prepare inner-city athletic fields used by the organization.

Overall, PAL has 10,000 participants annually, primarily ranging in age from 5-14, and offers 11 different sports run by volunteer coaches.

A former Detroit resident, Brown and his family left the city six years ago and moved to Dearborn.

In his first two years at Edsel Ford, he has been a three-sport athlete and participated in football, swimming and track. He also carries a 3.4 grade point average and is the class president.

While living in Detroit, Brown began his athletic career as a PAL little league baseball and football player.

So, when it came to finding a summer job last year, Brown said working with PAL really fit what he was looking for in summer employment.

?I felt like if either I can give back by either working or community service, then I?ve done my job,? Brown said.

Encouragement to go above and beyond a more typical teen summer job came from his mother, Tondra Prescott, as well.

?She wants me to be more involved in everything instead of just doing sports and activities at the school; to seek out other stuff outside of Dearborn and get involved,? he said.

PAL Associate Athletic Director Christopher Clough said Brown is a tireless worker who is always asking to take on more duties.

?We quickly found out that Kam has an insatiable work ethic,? Clough said. ?We can never keep him busy enough.?

Aside from his hard work, Clough said Brown has also stepped into a leadership role.

Every morning, he said Brown heads up a group of nine teens who perform daily field maintenance on 11 baseball diamonds.

Later in the day, Clough said Brown moves on to volunteer with PAL youth baseball camps.

?Here his real talent shines,? Clough said of Brown?s efforts with the youth camps. ?Kam is great with kids. He?s a natural teacher and loves to see the kids learn a new skill.?

After high school, Brown said he plans on going to college and will work toward a career in either cardiology or culinary arts.

However, he said he also has hopes of extending his track career beyond the prep level and someday participating in the Olympics. Currently, he said his best events are the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

(CNN) -- A ninth woman is accusing San Diego Mayor Bob Filner of sexual harassment.

Emily Gilbert told CNN Friday that she was hired to sing at a fundraising event in December. Afterward, she said, the mayor grabbed her, slid his hand down the small of her back and gave her "tush a pat."

She said Filner had pulled her away and told his female assistant to give him and Gilbert a moment alone.

He then asked her: "Oh, Marilyn, can I get your card?" she recalled to CNN. Gilbert bears a passing resemblance to Marilyn Monroe, but she hastened to add she was not performing as a Monroe impersonator.

She said that he touched her, Filner told the singer, "I hope to see you again, Marilyn."

Gilbert told CNN that her husband was upset but felt powerless because Filner was the mayor.

CNN has made multiple efforts to contact Filner and his representatives on the latest allegations but has not gotten a response.

The 70-year-old, dogged for weeks by sexual harassment allegations, served five terms in Congress before being elected mayor in 2012.

Earlier this summer, when the allegations first began, Filner acknowledged "I need help," and added, "I'm clearly doing something wrong."

"I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them. It's a good thing that behavior that would have been tolerated in the past is being called out in this generation for what it is: inappropriate and wrong," he said in a statement issued July 11.

But Filner has also said he believes he will be vindicated by "a full presentation of the facts" and he will not resign.

In late July, Filner said he planned to enter "a behavior counseling clinic" for two weeks of intensive therapy starting August 5. In a statement given at City Hall, he apologized "to the women I have offended."

"The behavior I have engaged in over many years is wrong. My failure to respect women and the intimidating conduct I engaged in at times is inexcusable," he said.

Before Gilbert, Filner's former spokeswoman, Irene McCormack Jackson, and seven other women accused Filner of sexual harassment. Jackson has filed a sexual harassment suit against Filner.

He asked the city to pay for his legal fees; the city council voted against that.

Jackson said Filner subjected her and other women to "crude and disgusting" comments and inappropriate touching. She said she resigned as Filner's communications director in June after deciding the mayor would not change his behavior.

None of the other women leveling claims of sexual harassment against Filner came forward until Jackson filed her suit in state court.

One of the women is a nonprofit group founder who said she was lobbying Filner for her organization, which works with military and other families hurt by domestic violence. Morgan Rose met with Filner in 2009 at a Marie Callender's Restaurant & Bakery across the street from Filner's congressional office in Chula Vista, California, she told CNN.

Filner allegedly looked her up and down, stared into her eyes and said, "Your eyes have bewitched me," Rose said.

Filner allegedly then made a remark along the lines of, according to Rose's paraphrasing, "You'll have to excuse me for what's about to happen. It's your fault."

Filner then moved to her side of the booth, sat beside her, pinned her to the wall, and put his arm around her, Rose alleged.

Rose avoided the advances, and Filner was suddenly interrupted by his ringing cell phone, Rose said.

Filner got up from the booth, gathered his materials and left the restaurant, Rose said.

Rose spoke of the incident to her closest friends and didn't pursue the matter because she feared her nonprofit might somehow suffer, she told CNN.

But when Rose said that when she heard of similar accusations against Filner in recent weeks, she called a victim's hotline at the sheriff's department and spoke with a captain.

Another woman, political consultant Laura Fink, has accused the mayor of patting what she described as her "posterior" at a fundraising event in 2005. At the time, Fink was working as the deputy manager of Filner's congressional campaign. Fink told CNN that she thinks Filner should resign.

Sharon Bernie-Cloward, president of the San Diego Port Tenants Association, claims that when Filner was running for mayor in 2012, he approached her at a political event, according to San Diego's public television station.

"He touched me, actually groped me on my backside inappropriately," Bernie-Cloward told KPBS. "I was left there startled and fearful. In fact, I actually had someone walk me to my car that night."

Patti Roscoe, a prominent businesswoman in San Diego's tourism and hospitality industry, told KPBS that on numerous occasions, Filner "put in me what I guess now is the famous headlock."

"I felt fearful, even as well as I knew him, because it was an invasion into my space," Roscoe told the station. "And he would come in and try to kiss me on the lips and I'd have to squirm to get away. And just as recently as a few months ago this happened. I turned and he just slobbered down my chin.

"And I was so violated and so offended. It's just such a terrible invasion."

Veronica "Ronne" Froman, a retired Navy rear admiral and San Diego's former chief operating officer, told KPBS said that she and Filner, then a congressman, met a few years ago at his office after everyone had left.

"He stopped me and he got very close to me. And he ran his finger up my cheek like this and he whispered to me, 'Do you have a man in your life?' " Froman said. "I jumped back. I was very, very startled. And I said, 'Yes, I have a man in my life.'

"And he said, 'who?' And I said, 'Linden Blue.' He says, 'Oh, of the Blues Brothers?' And he says, 'Maybe we can get together sometime and have lunch and he can support me for mayor.'

"I was really rattled. I got in the car with the two guys I was working with and I told them never to leave me alone in a room with Bob Filner again."

Joyce Gattas, a dean at San Diego State University, told KPBS that she had several "interactions" with Filner "where he's held me too tight, a kiss on the cheek which is inappropriate, hands on the knee that last too long."

The eighth woman to accuse the mayor was Lisa Curtin, who is director of government and military education at San Diego City College, according to KPBS. She said that he grabbed her hand, fingered her wedding ring and asked if it was real. She also said he tried to kiss her; she moved her head and she felt his tongue on her cheek.

Cedar Crest student loses Facebook harassment charge appeal

An appeals court is upholding a teen girl?s conviction for harassment because she posted on Facebook that another girl had herpes.

Superior Court ruled Friday in the case of an 18-year-old Cedar Crest High School student who put up the untrue posting last year about a 15-year-old girl.

The defendant's lawyer, Elizabeth Judd, says the posting, which also advised the younger girl to "stop spreading her legs like her mother," was taken down after a short period of time.

Judd says the girl regrets the posting, and she's considering an appeal.

Lebanon County District Attorney David Arnold calls it "pretty much a textbook case of what you call cyberbullying."

The appeal panel ruling says the posting was meant only to harass, annoy or alarm the victim.

Want to Watch a Muslim Congressman Strum a Celebratory Tune for First Day of Legal Gay Marriage in His State?

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) posted a video to his YouTube account Thursday that celebrates, in guitar-strumming song no less, the first day of legal gay marriage in his home state.

The video is gaining attention not only because of its melodic merits, but also because Ellison is Muslim, and Islam is traditionally opposed to same-sex relationships.

"Tomorrow, marry who you want, marry who you love," Ellison exults after a few bars of "This Land Is Your Land" accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar.

"It's all going on tomorrow because people got involved, people got active, because people did not sit back and wait for something to happen nor did they cry about bad things that were happening."

"You go do it, you go be happy, you go live your life for liberty and justice for all," he adds.

The world's three major religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) traditionally stand against homosexual behavior. Still, there are other streams of Islam that go against that tide.

GLENDALE, Arizona ? Karim Benzema scored two second-half goals to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday in the preseason Champions Cup friendly tournament.

"In general it was a good performance from the team," Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We played well. We had a good combination in the front. We had a lot of opportunities."

Midfielder Angel DiMaria scored the first goal, taking a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who had beaten three defenders.

Ronaldo had multiple chances to score early in the match, hitting the cross bar in the sixth minute.

The fans in the crowd of 38,922 rose to their feet every time Ronaldo touched the ball. The Di Maria-Ronaldo connection almost produced another result in the 38th minute, as Ronaldo had plenty of time to settle a pass at his feet, dribble and shoot. But his shot went over the goal.

"The atmosphere was really fantastic and the stadium was one of the best in the world," Ancelotti said. "We will have a good memory of the experience in the future."

Ronaldo left the match at halftime, replaced by Benzema. It took the Frenchman only six minutes to score.

Francisco Alarcon looped a pass to Benzema, who was in open space and shot the ball past Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

Real Madrid was close to a third goal after some nifty dribbling from Alarcon at the top of the penalty area, but his 60th-minute shot was saved.

Jose Villareal pulled the Galaxy to 2-1 with some skillful work in the 63rd minute. Seconds after Brazilian star Kaka left the match for a substitution, Villareal took two touches to get some room and fired a shot past Real Madrid keeper Diego Lopez.

Di Maria found Benzema in the 74th minute with a cross over the Galaxy defenders for the final goal of the match.

Ouya Game Console Owners Not Playing Games - internet TV

The Ouya Kickstarter-funded android based game console has been eagerly awaited by gamers. And since the launch it seems the eagerness has evaporated, as a mere 27% (or less than a third) have paid for a single game.

The $99 console launched last month is by definition a cheap entry into the console market, and will appeal to those that are fed up with paying $40-60 for a game,? but it would be like buying a new Xbox one and not bothering to buy a game!

Many android games are of the ?freemium? variety, that is you can download a free version and pay if you want extra level or the full version. And of course, the android system makes for a great streaming device and XBMC media platform.

Most early buyers of the fledgling game console have been crowdsource investors, so possible the console is more of a trophy than a working product, and it could be that the second wave of public Ouya buyers may be a little less ?tight?.

Speaking to The Verge CEO of Ouya, Julie Uhrman put on a brave face saying that sales have been, ?better than expected,? and that, ? For 13 of the top 20 games on the system, at least eight percent of free downloads are converted into a paid purchase.?

Limbaugh Blasts Republicans For Enabling Obamacare: GOP ?Has Made Decision To Side With Washington?

Rush Limbaugh went after the so-called GOP establishment on Friday for avoiding measures to defund Obamacare, dismissing claims that shutting down the government shutdown over the law would backfire as it did for Republicans in 1995, and arguing that DOMA provided a model for reversing seemingly entrenched legislation.

?It?s the most unpopular federal program ever, and the Republican Party is choosing not to align themselves with the majority of the American people,? Limbaugh said. ?It just boggles the mind.?

Limbaugh excoriated the GOP for running from Senator Mike Lee?s recent proposal to threaten a government shutdown over funding for the Affordable Care Act:

?Folks, the Republican establishment?the GOP, RNC?is not interested in this at all. Quite the contrary. I mean, we?ve got Republican Party leaders actually advocating for the total implementation of Obamacare now, under the theory, ?Look, it?s law. You can?t stop it. And, if you shut down the government, the Republicans are gonna get blamed again just like 1995. It?s a lose-lose proposition. Just go ahead and let the law be implemented and watch it implode and kill the Democrats that way.? And I don?t intellectually understand it.?

?There?s a great story by Daniel Mitchell, National Review Online posted all the way back in February of 2011,? Limbaugh said. ?It is a great detailed story of how the 1995 budget shutdown really did not hurt the Republican Party. It wasn?t a deathblow. And in fact, not only did it not really do that much damage to the party, it was a good thing for the country.?

Limbaugh then argued that the Democrats? defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act could be used as a model for overturning unpopular legislation. ?The Republican Party has made the decision to side with Washington,? he said. ??Well, you know, it?s law now. We can?t stop it.? Well, I?m sorry, but the Defense of Marriage Act was the law, and Obama and the Democrats said, ?You know what? We?re not gonna defend it anymore. We?re not gonna litigate it. We?re not gonna enforce it.? And that was a Democrat law!?

Amazon hit by surprise loss last quarter, despite 22 percent rise in sales

The retail game is all about scraping big profits out of tiny margins, and nowhere is that more evident than in Amazon's latest financial report. The company managed grow revenue by 22 percent year-over-year between April and June, and yet it confounded analysts' predictions by making a loss of $7 million, versus a $7 million profit in the same quarter last year. Then again,the loss has been attributed to the fact that Amazon is pushing to expand beyond the retail game, by investing heavily in its Kindle business, digital downloads and streaming products, as well as in building a bigger presence in China. This has been the company's strategy for a while, of course, and it's not the first time it has been pushed into the red as a result. But Jeff Bezos says that his company's top ten selling products last quarter were all either Kindles, accessories for Kindles, or digital content for Kindles, which suggests the transformation is steadily having an impact, even if it's proving expensive.

Long-term grant recognizes a legacy of outstanding research contributions

Troy, N.Y. Susan Gilbert, professor and head of the Department of Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been awarded a National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council National Institutes of Health (NIH) Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award, a recognition of the high quality of her research contributions over time. The MERIT Award offers long-term grant support to investigators of proven research competence and productivity and is expected to facilitate creative, innovative research that will have an exceptional impact on the field.

"Susan is to be congratulated for a very significant and rare achievement in earning an NIH MERIT award," said Laurie Leshin, dean of the School of Science at Rensselaer. "It's a well-earned recognition of the long-standing, extremely high quality of her research. The award provides her the freedom to explore cutting-edge scientific ideas in ways that wouldn't otherwise have been possible. The National Institutes of Heath are to be commended for working to enable their researchers to seek paradigm-shifting breakthroughs."

The MERIT grant will support Gilbert's continuing research of kinesins, a class of molecular motors that ferry cargo along the cytoskeleton of a cell. The overall goal of her research proposal is to understand how the mechanochemistry of kinesin motors underlies their ability to promote intracellular transport, generation of cell polarity, and remodeling of the microtubule cytoskeleton for cell division, cell differentiation, and morphogenesis during human development. Her work could shed light on diverse pathologies that have been linked to defects in kinesins, including cancer, ciliopathies, neuropathies, and birth defects. Gilbert's research contributes to the School of Science interdisciplinary science theme of "biomedical science and applications."

"NIGMS selected Dr. Gilbert for a MERIT award in recognition of her pioneering work on microtubule motor proteins, which has set the standard for other researchers in the field," said Joe Gindhart, Ph.D., the program director who manages Gilbert's NIGMS grant. "Her work has the potential to enhance our understanding of how motor proteins work to segregate chromosomes, build cilia and move organelles in nerve cells, and to help explain how defects in motor protein function contribute to cancer, neurological diseases, and other conditions."

The MERIT award includes an initial award of about $2 million over five years, accompanied by the opportunity of funding for an additional three to five years. "I am thrilled to receive the NIH MERIT Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which has funded my research program since 1996," said Gilbert. "The overarching goal of my research program is to understand how molecular motors generate force and to apply this insight to understand their roles in cell organization and function in normal and in diseased states. This award will allow us to continue this important fundamental research and to pursue higher risk scientific questions to define the relationships between kinesin structure, mechanochemistry, and function."

Gilbert received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and a doctorate in cell biology from Dartmouth College. Her research focuses on cellular movements, and the molecular motors that drive these movements to better understand cellular function and dysfunctions. She performed much of her early research at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. She completed her postdoctoral research at Pennsylvania State University. Gilbert received an NIH Career Development Award through the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Gilbert is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a member of the Biophysical Society serving as a member of Council and chair of the membership committee, a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She served on the editorial boards for the Biophysical Journal, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Nanomedicine, and Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology, and Medicine.

Guerilla Tea creates cancer research title

Cancer Research UK and Dundee based developer Guerilla Tea have joined forces to create GeneGame, a mobile title that will allow gamers to analyse gene data and contribute to the fight against cancer.

"We're absolutely delighted to have been selected by Cancer Research UK for this project," said Guerilla Tea CEO Mark Hastings.

"We've always believed games technology has the potential to provide huge benefits to other sectors and this project will be a wonderful example of that. We're very excited to get started and through our work look forward to helping speed up discoveries that one day might lead to new cancer treatments."

In March Cancer Research UK held a gamejam in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, Facebook and Google, where academics, scientists, gamers and designers created 12 gaming prototypes based on the needs of the charity's gene research. GeneGame will build on those foundations, and is due to be completed later this year.

Gamers are a useful resource for this particular brand of research, as the "terabytes upon petabytes" of data created can only be accurately analysed by the human eye. Utilising gamer's free time is an effective way of speeding up that process.

"We're right at the start of a world-first initiative that will result in a game that we hope hundreds of thousands of people across the globe will want to play over and over again and, at the same time, generate robust scientific data analysis," added Amy Carton, citizen science lead for Cancer Research UK.

"Combining complicated cancer research data and gaming technology in this way has never been done before and it's certainly no mean feat but we're working with the best scientific and technology brains in the business, we're ready for the challenge and believe the results will have global impact and speed up research."

This isn't the first time gamers have been given the chance to contribute to scientific research. In 2000 a programme called Folding@home launched which used people's home computers and PlayStation 3 consoles to to carry out molecular dynamics research. During its lifetime the PlayStation version of the programme had a huge impact, with 15 million users contributing more than 100 million hours of computation to Folding@home
